Fans of Sleep<\/strong> were handed a mixed bag on Thursday, as the revered stoner metal trio shared its first new music in eight years and announced its first full tour in nearly as long\u2014albeit without founding guitarist Matt Pike<\/strong>. Bassist\u00a0Al Cisneros<\/strong>, now the only remaining original member, will tour North America this fall with a new Sleep lineup featuring\u00a0guitarist Bubba Dupree<\/strong> of \u201980s D.C. hardcore punk band Void and Melvins drummer Dale Crover<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Of Pike\u2019s departure, a press release states, \u201cThe music and art are alive and after the decades of obstacles that Sleep has overcome, it is time to move forward and make songs and albums. Al wishes Matt the best on his earth bound maneuvers.\u201d<\/p>\n Sleep hasn\u2019t performed live since 2022 (fittingly on 4\/20<\/a>), and the band\u2019s last album\u20142018\u2019s\u00a0The Sciences<\/em>\u2014snapped a 15-year dry spell of new studio LPs. Longtime drummer\u00a0Jason Roeder<\/strong> then announced<\/a> in 2025 that he was \u201cunceremoniously fired over the phone,\u201d and it appeared that Sleep was entering another prolonged period of repose. This was nothing new for fans, who had seen Sleep break up in the late \u201990s, reunite in 2009, and take nearly 30 years to release four studio albums.<\/p>\n But as Thursday\u2019s press release notes, the decision to replace Pike with Bubba Dupree is \u201ca choice no one would have seen coming.\u201d Along with the lineup and tour announcement, Sleep issued its first new release without Matt Pike, \u201cHave Spacesuit Will Travel.\u201d Though Cisneros likened the new lineup\u2019s first jam to \u201cblue sunglasses-era Iommi in quality,\u201d the new single sounds like Sleep has lost its Iommi.
