The \u201cDirty Jobs\u201d star joined \u201cOn Balance with Leland Vittert\u201d<\/a> on Friday and reflected on the influence of his father, an elementary school teacher and the lessons he learned growing up.<\/p>\n

Rowe said he hit the \u2018double lottery\u2019 with father and grandfather<\/h2>\n

Rowe said his appreciation for his father deepened over time, especially after his mother explained how hard he worked to support his family \u201cat a job that was never his dream job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowe added that he hit the \u201cdouble lottery,\u201d describing how his grandfather set a different yet complementary example for him as a parental figure.<\/p>\n

\u201cBetween the two of them, they checked every box,\u201d Rowe said, explaining that his father \u201cwas very, very specific in the way he raised his three sons, but right next door I had a grandfather who was different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rowe criticizes modern portrayal of fathers in media<\/h2>\n

Rowe also criticized the modern portrayal of fathers in sitcoms, describing how they are often depicted as \u201cthe brunt of the joke.\u201d He believes the characterization is unhelpful and referenced how older shows, like the 1950s hit \u201cLeave It to Beaver,\u201d portrayed fathers in a positive light.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pendulum,\u201d Rowe said. \u201cWith \u2018Father Knows Best\u2019 and \u2018Leave it to Beaver,\u2019 we were all the way in that direction, and then we came all the way back.\u201d<\/p>\n
