We\u2019re still months away from clocking back into \u201cThe Pitt<\/a>,\u201d but anticipation for Season 3 couldn\u2019t be higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n HBO Max\u2019s Emmy-winning medical drama wrapped up another stressful shift in April with Season 2\u2032s whirlwind finale<\/a>. The explosive episode left viewers with more questions than answers about where things stand, especially after Dr. Robby\u2019s (Noah Wyle) sabbatical turned out to be less of a break and more like a cry for help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n As fans saw, the suicidal senior attending reached a breaking point once again as he contemplated whether he could ever return to the hospital. But according to creator R. Scott Gemmill, Robby\u2019s emotional reckoning marks just the beginning of a much longer healing process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s hit rock bottom yet,\u201d he previously told Deadline<\/a>. \u201cHe certainly had some stumbles. Robby has a long way to go to heal himself, and he hasn\u2019t really even started the sabbatical … So, the big question at the end is: is he going to go, and if he does, is he going to come back?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Series star and executive producer Wyle echoed that sentiment in a recent interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>, confirming that Season 3 will continue exploring Robby\u2019s mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSeason 1 is the doctor is the patient. Season 2, doctors don\u2019t make good patients. Season 3, doctors benefit from being patients,\u201d he explained. \u201cSo that\u2019s really where our head is at now. We\u2019re watching this mental health journey take place from total denial to acceptance of a problem to baby steps up and out of his proverbial pit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Robby\u2019s recovery won\u2019t be the only storyline shaking things up in Season 3 of \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d The series already said goodbye to one pivotal character<\/a> ahead of its return, and reports have hinted at even more staffing changes in the fictional ER.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Keep reading ahead for everything else we know about the next season of \u201cThe Pitt.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The team behind \u201cThe Pitt\u201d has revealed very little about what exactly lies ahead in Season 3, but viewers can likely expect more real-world storylines<\/a> from the true-to-life<\/a> medical drama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n One arc already taking shape is Robby\u2019s mental health journey, which will largely impact his return to the hospital. In fact, creator Gemmill hinted that Robby\u2019s path back won\u2019t be as straightforward as audiences might expect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOne of the things we play in Season 3 is that he comes back, but he doesn\u2019t come back to the hospital right away,\u201d he told TVLine<\/a> following Season 2\u2032s finale. \u201cHe will show up [in Episode 1], but he\u2019s been away from work longer than three months.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Another storyline set to carry over into Season 3 is the unresolved tension between Robby and Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball). The two fell out in Season 1 after Robby kicked his former prot\u00e9g\u00e9 out of the ER for stealing pain medication from his patients, and the fallout from that betrayal continued throughout Season 2 following Langdon\u2019s return from rehab.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cKeeping those characters apart, almost like polar ends of a magnet, was a great device in Season 2,\u201d Wyle told Vanity Fair. \u201cYou wanna bring those characters together somehow in Season 3, and yet it\u2019s gonna be flipped.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cRobby\u2019s coming back now to an environment he hasn\u2019t been in for a couple months,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe don\u2019t know what kind of ring rust he has as a physician or what type of shame or embarrassment. He\u2019s walking back into an environment that he wasn\u2019t acting as his best self at the last time he was in. That\u2019s one relationship I\u2019m really excited about exploring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi), who stepped in as Robby\u2019s temporary replacement during his sabbatical, was left with an uncertain future in the Season 2 finale as well after learning that her seizure disorder could jeopardize her role in the ER. But according to Gemmill, \u201cthere\u2019s still more story to be told with that\u201d in Season 3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI think we\u2019d like to sort of see how she deals with this situation moving forward,\u201d he noted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Both Wyle and Gemmill have already confirmed that Season 3 will have another time jump<\/a>, four months to be exact, set in the colder months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019ll start in November. That serves a lot of purposes for us,\u201d Gemmill told TVLine<\/a>. \u201cIt gives us some cold-weather scenarios, but also allows us to keep people a little longer who would normally be moving on, if we want. Sometimes those big jumps aren\u2019t always ideal. There\u2019s a lot of information you have to catch up on, so this way it\u2019s less of a dump.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n According to an interview with USA Today<\/a>, Wyle also promised that the \u201cpre-Thanksgiving\u201d-set season will be \u201cexplosive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Wyle, Ball and Moafi are all set to return alongside Katherine LaNasa (Dana Evans), Fiona Dourif<\/a> (Dr. Cassie McKay), Taylor Dearden (Dr. Mel King), Isa Briones (Dr. Trinity Santos), Gerran Howell (Dr. Dennis Whitaker), Shabana Azeez (Victoria Javadi) and Shawn Hatosy (Dr. Jack Abbott).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n While additional cast returns have yet to be confirmed, Variety reported<\/a> that Ayesha Harris \u2014 who plays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis \u2014 has been upped to a series regular for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n One of the biggest departures heading into Season 3 is Supriya Ganesh. Fans of \u201cThe Pitt\u201d were stunned when news broke in early April that the actor, who portrayed senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan, would be exiting the series after two seasons due to a \u201cstory-driven decision,\u201d Variety reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n At the time, Wyle defended the move<\/a> during PaleyFest, telling Variety\u2019s Marc Malkin<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s an inevitability that\u2019s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we\u2019re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt\u2019s sort of the nature of the show,\u201d creator Gemmill echoed. \u201cUnfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we\u2019re going to turn over our cast. But I think it\u2019s a great launching pad for people and that\u2019s the best we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Wyle also praised Ganesh and her \u201cbeloved character,\u201d adding, \u201cI love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors, and we\u2019re going to miss her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A month later, Ganesh finally addressed her exit during an interview with Variety<\/a>, saying, \u201cI saw my name was trending on Twitter, and I was like, \u2018Gotta put the phone down and go outside.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cSo, I haven\u2019t really been keeping track of it, to be honest, but I\u2019ve been getting such sweet, lovely messages from people,\u201d she shared, \u201cand I\u2019ve honestly just been surprised at how much people love the character and saw so much of themselves in her, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to miss.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n A premiere date for Season 3 has not yet been announced, but on June 16, HBO Max confirmed that production has finally begun<\/a>.
