The three incarcerated characters are meant to represent United Healthcare CEO <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/luigi-mangione-united-healthcare-ceo-shooting-suspect-1235290609\/\">shooting suspect Luigi Mangione<\/a> as well as convicted felons <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/diddy-friends-bad-boy-artists-abuse-violence-1235028178\/\">Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs<\/a> and cryptocurrency entrepreneur <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-trial-explained-1234829900\/\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a>. The musical focuses on an imagined friendship between the three men, who at one point were all being held at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/luigi-mangione-maduro-diddy-jail-mdc-1235507094\/\">Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn<\/a>. (In reality, Bankman-Fried and Combs were housed in the same high-profile unit but Mangione was assigned to a unit in a different building entirely.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThese are three men who represent the three pillars of American life that people have lost trust in over the past 15 years,\u201d the musical\u2019s creator Nova Bradford tells me. She\u2019s referring to healthcare, Hollywood, and Big Tech. \u201cSymbolically, we\u2019re telling a story about America\u2019s relationship to these institutions through the story of these three individuals in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe plot is loosely about the three famous inmates planning a prison escape, but it\u2019s really a critique about society\u2019s relationship with celebrity worship, with commentary about the for-profit healthcare industry woven in. The script hides serious moral and ethical conversations about fame, political violence, and powerful institutions amongst jokes about hashbrowns. It talks about why we, as a culture, venerate certain people, as well as looking at the cultural response to different high-profile criminals and suspects. It does so without taking itself too seriously, marrying commentary with over-the-top satire, including a romantic relationship between Diddy and Bankman-Fried and a running joke where Mangione writes in his diary, singing, \u201cDear Manifesto.\u201d Just when there are emotional moments of sincerity about healthcare denials causing bankruptcy and even death, the tone shifts with a joke about fan girls sending Mangione their underwear.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what you\u2019re famous for, it just matters that you\u2019re famous,\u201d Diddy\u2019s character\u00a0(played by Chine Ikoro) tells Mangione (played by Mike Cefalo).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cPeople are addicted to being angry and scared \u2014 so if you\u2019re doing something to keep them that way, they\u2019ll make you go viral,\u201d continues fictional Diddy. He advises fictional Mangione to stay famous by feeding the public simple stories they can understand, offering them a hero and a villain. At one point, the musical jokes about President Donald Trump <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/sean-diddy-combs-trump-pardon-trial-1235340256\/\">pardoning Diddy<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sam-bankman-fried\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sam-bankman-fried\" data-tag=\"sam-bankman-fried\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> (played by co-writer Andre Margatini). We\u2019re engaging with all of the types of responses that the audience might be having, so the goal is that, regardless of someone\u2019s existing opinions on the subject matter, they will see the show and find that their perspective is both reflected and also challenged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOne of the moments in the musical that caused the most laughter and claps from the audience was the final song, which mocks the idea of using violence as a form of protest rather than joining a movement or focusing on policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMangione\u2019s character takes off his shirt while singing, \u201cThe world has a lot of inequality \/ so I\u2019ll wreak some bloody violence \u2018til there\u2019s harmony \/ Every single human being\u2019s life has worth \/ that\u2019s why I\u2019ll shoot everybody \u2018til there\u2019s peace on Earth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe musical is still a work in progress, Bradford and her co-writers and composer hope to eventually turn the play into a full-fledged production in New York City. They\u2019ve done readings in San Francisco, where they are based, and a festival in Scotland, as a way to test interest. The troupe was surprised by the media explosion around the show\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBefore the musical even opened, it was being discussed by Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher, and they were on the front page of an Icelandic newspaper. \u201cPart of the motivation for wanting to write the show was seeing the media circus that happened around the [Mangione] case and thinking about virality, why this happens, the news cycle\u2019s focus on violence, and then before the show even opened we found ourselves at the center of the very phenomenon we sought to critique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWaiting outside of the show this week were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/luigi-mangione-supporters-1235423575\/\">supporters of Mangione<\/a>, holding a large \u201cFree Luigi! Free Us All!!!\u201d banner. These supporters are often regulars at Mangione\u2019s hearing, and handed out stickers advocating for jury nullification as well as a mock playbill with information they\u2019d put together about Mangione\u2019s legal cases. The playbill accused the musical of prejudicing potential future jurors, telling readers, \u201cThe musical you are attending tonight is part of the problem.\u201d Outside of the venue there were mock musical posters plastered on the wall, advertising a \u201cThis is Not Luigi Musical\u201d which \u201cfeatured an illegal search and seizure, prejudicial perp walk and leaked evidence.\u201d A note on the bottom of the posters said they were to \u201craise awareness of the rights violations\u201d involved in Mangione\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOpening night of the New York City-staged reading was two days before Mangione\u2019s state hearing. On Wednesday, Judge Gregory Carro unsealed a notice that had been previously filed by Mangione\u2019s defense team, revealing that they <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-news\/luigi-mangione-psychiatric-defense-1235579360\/\">may use a psychiatric defense<\/a> in the New York state murder case against him.\u00a0If used, the psychiatric defense would have claimed Mangione acted under \u201cextreme emotional disturbance\u201d in the shooting of Thompson.
