{"id":2470317,"date":"2026-06-22T10:26:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T10:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2470317"},"modified":"2026-06-22T10:26:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T10:26:59","slug":"from-field-to-frock-madison-festival-promotes-midwest-linen-entertainment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/from-field-to-frock-madison-festival-promotes-midwest-linen-entertainment\/","title":{"rendered":"From Field to Frock: Madison festival promotes Midwest linen | Entertainment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" false=\"\">\n                                <meta itemprop=\"isAccessibleForFree\" content=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Cap Times is an independent newsroom serving Madison and Wisconsin. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/newsletters\/?=header\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Food &amp; Culture newsletter<\/a> for exclusive weekly insight.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u201cWhere were your clothes grown?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s the question Jessica Becker and Leslie Schroeder like to ask people who haven\u2019t given much thought to the textile industry before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Becker and Schroeder are the co-organizers behind <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinlinenrevival.org\/field-to-frock\">Field to Frock<\/a>, a Madison-based festival put on by Schroeder\u2019s nonprofit <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsinlinenrevival.org\/\">Midwest Linen Revival.<\/a> This summer marks Field to Frock\u2019s second year running, with pre-festival events set to kick off on Tuesday, June 23 and end with an expert panel discussion and linen fashion show on Sunday, June 28.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Midwest Linen Revival is a nonprofit aiming to promote sustainably grown flax and the processing of flax fiber products, like linen, within the region. \u201cField to Frock\u201d is like their take on \u201cfarm to table.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Around 2022, Schroeder found herself inspired by the emergence of various fibershed organizations, like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fibershedheartland.org\/\">Fibershed Heartland<\/a>, which encompasses parts of Wisconsin and Illinois. These organizations were looking to develop sustainable networks to process local products like wool, leather and flax.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI found myself asking, \u2018What can I do as one person to promote local clothes?\u2019\u201d Schroeder said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From that thought, Midwest Linen Revival was born.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset Using the linocut process, Becker carves stamps to create printed patterns on the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>                                <\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                <span class=\"credit\"><br \/>\n                                    <span itemprop=\"author\" class=\"tnt-byline\">RUTHIE HAUGE<\/span><br \/>\n                                <\/span><\/p>\n<p>                        <span class=\"clearfix\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m really, really interested in flax because I\u2019m interested in bast fibers and the ancient relationship people have with them,\u201d Schroeder said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bast fibers are fibers that come from a plant\u2019s stem (like flax, hemp and nettle) as opposed to a fiber like cotton that comes from the flowering part of the plant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPeople have been using this for literally tens of thousands of years,\u201d Schroeder said. \u201cSo then, it all came together, and I was like, \u2018Oh, flax. You can grow it here, so why are we not growing it here?\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Wisconsin\u2019s climate is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cropsandsoils.extension.wisc.edu\/flax\/\">well-suited<\/a> for growing flax, but Schroeder said historically, other factors have hindered a modern flax-linen industry in the Midwest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c(Flax) couldn\u2019t compete with cheap cotton, so we didn\u2019t get the infrastructure set up, and then everything lost to synthetics,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Synthetics are materials like polyester and nylon, which are not biodegradable and shed microplastics as they break down. In 2024, the United Nations <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/from-petroleum-to-pollution-the-cost-of-polyester\/\">estimated<\/a> that roughly 60% of all clothing was made from synthetics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image layout-horizontal  subscriber-hide  tnt-inline-asset tnt-inline-relcontent tnt-inline-image tnt-inline-relation-child class=\"clearfix\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, even if more Midwest farmers were growing flax for fiber, and Schroeder says the interest is there, there still wouldn\u2019t be enough regional infrastructure to process it into linen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI discourage anybody from growing (flax fiber) at any kind of scale or even considering it, because there\u2019s no destination for it right now,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These supply chain issues are what Schroeder helps to shift the conversation towards with Field to Frock.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Fashion as an entry point\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jessica Becker is the co-organizer of Field to Frock and Schroeder\u2019s longtime friend; she also has an extensive background in public programming and event planning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe just started to imagine some of the fun things that we could do last year, and it actually went phenomenally, we couldn\u2019t believe how much interest there was,\u201d Becker said\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image A simple google search of \u201cfashion\u201d plus \u201clinen\u201d will bring up countless recent articles raving about how the fabric is breathable, sustainable and trendy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In Becker\u2019s eyes this popularity can be an excellent starting point for conversations around textiles, the industry, and what it means to be human.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe all wear clothes in the same way we all eat food, and yet we kind of fail to think through those complexities and the beauty of it,\u201d she said. \u201cHumans have always decorated themselves and so I find it refreshing to be connected in it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s one of the reasons why leading up to Field to Frock, both Schroeder and Becker have been participating in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/search\/keyword\/?q=%23100daylinendresschallenge\">100-day linen dress challenge,<\/a> where they have each worn one different way. Jessica and I have been doing our own personal contemplating about our wardrobes. One (question) is definitely, \u2018How many pieces do you even need?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The last day of Schroeder and Becker\u2019s linen dress challenge will be June 28, the same day as the festival\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/high-noon.com\/event\/field-to-frock-linen-fashion-show\/\">linen fashion show<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This final event will kick off with a panel discussion moderated by PBS Wisconsin\u2019s Ami Eckard-Lee and feature local farmers and experts in the flax-linen field. After the panel, a fashion show will showcase linen designs by students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Human Ecology alongside other local artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The show\u2019s artistic director Veronica Mingle spent countless hours sourcing secondhand linens like bedsheets and tea towels to repurpose and sew into garments for the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cA lot of it is stuff we\u2019re keeping out of the landfill, which is really fun for me,\u201d Mingle said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She hopes the event will help people see what their clothing is made out of truly matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThroughout all of human history we grew and made our clothing locally.
