Central Oregon Symphony announces new conductor, artistic director<\/h2>\n

Central Oregon Symphony has announced Jonathan Moore as its new music director and conductor. Among his duties, Moore will serve as music director of Cascade Winds Symphonic Band, principal conductor of OperaBend and assistant professor of music at Central Oregon Community College, which runs the community orchestra in partnership with the C.O. Symphony Association.<\/p>\n

Moore was born into a family of professional artists in Nice, France, and began studying piano and French horn at an early age. He earned masters degrees in instrumental conducting and French horn performance from Southern Methodist University and holds degrees in French horn performance and political science from the University of Florida. He is the former conductor of the SYZYGY New Music Ensemble in Dallas, Texas, and has more recently served as music director of Central Oregon Youth Orchestra and music director at Redmond Proficiency Academy. Moore has also performed with the Central Oregon Symphony and worked with both the Sunriver Music Festival and OperaBend.<\/p>\n

Moore lives in Bend with his wife, who also plays French horn in the community orchestra, and their young son. He enjoys backcountry skiing, cycling, travel and playing jazz piano.<\/p>\n

Succession<\/h3>\n

The C.O. Symphony has been a classical music mainstay for more than five decades. Moore is successor to Michael Gesme, who recently wrapped up his 30-year career as conductor and artistic director of the symphony.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael Gesme has been an incredible champion for classical music in Central Oregon,\u201d Moore said in Monday\u2019s announcement. \u201cI am honored to continue the Central Oregon Symphony\u2019s legacy of artistic excellence, accessibility, and community engagement as our region continues to grow.\u201d <\/p>\n

He envisions an emphasis on \u201cartistic excellence, community engagement, and programming that balances beloved masterworks with music by living composers representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n
