The traditional Changing of the Guard ceremonies at Buckingham
\nPalace and Windsor Castle have been suspended for several days this
\nweek as the Household Division implements measures to protect
\nsoldiers, military working horses and members of the public during
\nthe forecast heatwave.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued ahead of the week beginning 22 June, the
\nHousehold Division said the expected excessive temperatures,
\nincluding a Met Office red warning in the middle of the week, had
\nprompted temporary changes to daily ceremonial operations.<\/p>\n
There will be no ceremonial guard changes in London or Windsor
\non Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. In addition, the King\u2019s Life
\nGuard at Horse Guards Parade will change without ceremony at 8am on
\nWednesday to minimise the risk of heat stress to horses.<\/p>\n
The Household Division said the welfare of personnel and animals
\nremained paramount and that it was acting in line with advice
\nissued by the Met Office and other government agencies, which have
\nrecommended reducing outdoor activities during the hottest
\nperiod.<\/p>\n
Visitors may still see guards on duty, although soldiers are
\nbeing moved to shaded positions and relieved more frequently. The
\nArmy stressed that these are standard procedures during periods of
\nextreme heat.<\/p>\n
A statement said: \u201cWe understand this is a busy time of year for
\nvisitors to watch the Ceremonial Operations at each of the various
\nlocations. Whilst it may be disappointing not to experience the
\nCeremonial Operations in full, it is important the wellbeing of the
\npublic, our soldiers and military working horses is maintained at
\nall times.\u201d<\/p>\n
The disruption affects some of Britain\u2019s most popular tourist
\nattractions during the peak summer season. Buckingham Palace had
\nbeen due to host the Changing of the Guard by the 1st Battalion
\nGrenadier Guards on Monday, with Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards
\nscheduled to take over on Friday.<\/p>\n
At Windsor Castle, ceremonial duties resume on Saturday when the
\n1st Battalion Grenadier Guards are due to mount the guard,
\naccompanied by the Corps of Drums of the battalion.<\/p>\n
The temporary changes come as much of the country braces for
\nunusually high temperatures, with authorities urging people to
\nlimit travel and avoid unnecessary time outdoors during the hottest
\nparts of the day.<\/p>\n
