The Princess Royal and the Duke of Gloucester will undertake a
\nrare joint engagement next month as they travel to France to mark
\nthe 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.<\/p>\n
Princess Anne, in her role as President of the Commonwealth War
\nGraves Commission, and the Duke of Gloucester, Honorary President
\nof the Somme Association, will attend commemorative events on 1
\nJuly honouring those who fought and died in one of the bloodiest
\nbattles of the First World War.<\/p>\n
The engagement will bring together two of the Royal Family\u2019s
\nmost dedicated working members, who are seldom seen carrying out
\nofficial duties together.<\/p>\n
Their visit will coincide with the anniversary of the opening
\nday of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. More than one million men
\nfrom across the British Empire and other nations were killed or
\nwounded during the five-month campaign, while around 57,000 British
\ncasualties were suffered on the first day alone.<\/p>\n
As President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Princess
\nAnne has long championed the work of preserving the memory of those
\nwho made the ultimate sacrifice. The Duke of Gloucester, meanwhile,
\nserves as Honorary President of the Somme Association, which seeks
\nto maintain the memory and legacy of those who fought in the
\ncampaign.<\/p>\n
The commemorations in northern France will pay tribute to the
\nservicemen from Britain and across the Commonwealth who lost their
\nlives during the First World War and mark 110 years since troops
\nfirst went over the top on 1 July 1916.<\/p>\n
