Olivia Rodrigo’s new Daisy Chain Fields<\/u><\/a> festival takes place on August 29 in Irvine, California, and it has a Canadian inspiration: Sarah McLachlan and Lilith Fair.<\/p>\n Rodrigo revealed to Pitchfork<\/em><\/u><\/em><\/a> that she was \u201cdirectly inspired\u201d by the late \u201890s all-female-fronted music festival, Lilith Fair, co-founded by Canadian icon Sarah McLachlan. <\/p>\n McLachlan created Lilith Fair in response to music industry executives who claimed that tours wouldn\u2019t sell if they featured more than one woman. Kicking off in 1997, Lilith Fair ran for three consecutive summers until 1999, with a revival tour in 2010 \u2014 it helped give major spotlights to stars like The Chicks, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Tegan and Sara, Missy Elliott and Nelly Furtado.<\/p>\n Speaking about the festival years later, McLachlan \u201crealized early there\u2019s strength in numbers,\u201d and having so many notable female artists on a lineup was a statement. Nearly two decades later, Rodrigo wants to capture that same sentiment.<\/p>\n Last year, Rodrigo was a part of Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery \u2013 The Untold Story, an Ally Pankiw-directed<\/em> documentary<\/u><\/a> about McLachlan\u2019s legendary festival. Although she was born six years after the first Lilith outing, she\u2019s among the new generation of artists who are carrying on the torch of its impact.<\/p>\n \u201cFinding out that all my favourite artists had played at this event I was in disbelief that I\u2019d never heard of it before,\u201d Rodrigo said in the documentary. \u201cWomen singer-songwriters of the \u201990s, I\u2019m constantly looking to them for inspiration. They\u2019re my northern stars.\u201d <\/p>\n McLachlan is listed as a \u201cspecial guest\u201d at Daisy Chain Fields, alongside Stevie Nicks and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O.<\/p>\n
