This is the dawn of a new era!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Well, hold your Kryptos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the forgettable \u201cSupergirl,\u201d the second chapter in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/08\/entertainment\/superman-review-does-dc-studios-finally-have-a-hit\/\">the revamped DC Universe<\/a>, the franchise quickly plummets back down to Earth. As the old saying goes: the more capes change, the more capes stay the same.<\/p>\n<p>Director Craig Gillespie\u2019s movie starring an appealing Milly Alcock isn\u2019t a total wreck. It\u2019s blessed with a strong lead and is adequately enough executed. Had we not been bombarded with a million superhero movies over the last 15 years, \u201cSupergirl\u201d would be passably fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet we <em>have<\/em> been bombarded with a million superhero movies over the last 15 years. And box office receipts have shown that the audience has reached a point where we selfishly would like these films to at least attempt to be special and unique. In story, style, stunts. Something!\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Milly Alcock plays the title character in the new DC film \u201cSupergirl.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Warner Bros.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What a bummer then that \u201cSupergirl\u201d is rather unlike its title character, a k a Kara Zor-El, an against-the-grain rebel with a cause. No, this is a movie that tries super hard to fit in and thus fade out. And often that means, like a goth in the cafeteria, pretending to be edgy.<\/p>\n<p>Kara starts out as a super party girl \u2014 a drunken mess just like Aquaman or Thor in \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d \u2014 who takes shots all night and then wakes up drooling on the floor with a knife in her thigh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supergirl\u2019s slumming it on other planets far away from Metropolis as she goes hard for her twenty-third birthday. Really, though, she\u2019s avoiding responsibilities and hiding from her painful past. She was sent to Earth from planet Krypton by her parents after deadly Kryptonite ravaged its population.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her concerned cousin Superman begs her to come home. \u201cI\u2019m worried you might never find your people,\u201d he cloyingly says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Supergirl must hunt down the villain to get the antidote to save her dog, Krypto. <span class=\"credit\">Warner Bros.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Matthias Schoenaerts plays evil Krem. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead she finds Ruthye (Eve Ridley), an empty shell of a 13-year-old whose mom and weapon-maker dad have been killed by Krem of the Yellow Hills. Creepy Matthias Schoenaerts plays the punk-rock baddie, a vague and breathy human trafficker who looks like Vladimir Putin got too many face piercings one night after a lot of Stolichnaya.<\/p>\n<p>Inexplicably mature Ruthye asks Supergirl for help to kill Krem. Uninterested Kara only enlists after Krem shoots a toxic dart at her beloved dog Krypto. The pooch has only got three days to live and Kara needs to secure the antidote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The boring (but short!) film is based on the comic book \u201cSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,\u201d so I can\u2019t totally fault screenwriter Ana Nogueira for her lack of originality. But could somebody please find me the antidote for movies about finding the antidote?\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jason Momoa joins the fray as Lobo. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kara meets some weirdos along the way. Pseudo-supporting characters such as Lobo (Jason Momoa giving the only performance he knows how to do), a painted-faced motorcycle thug, and a little monkey alien who works on a space bus (voiced by Seth Rogen), will earn dismissive comparisons to \u201cMad Max\u201d and \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy.\u201d Rightly so.<\/p>\n<p>The only compelling performance here is Alcock\u2019s. Her personality, both petulant and lovable, shines through this predictable march toward the obvious like the yellow sun that gives Supergirl her power.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What Alcock cannot save with her natural pluck are the perfunctory fights.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The fights in \u201cSupergirl\u201d are always staged to counterintuitive rock and pop songs. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The action in Gillespie\u2019s movie is all staged in a manner that was once fun and novel, but has become repetitive and annoying, like Labubus or 67.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Time and again, Supergirl swiftly KOs hordes of enemies all by herself as a counterintuitive rock song plays in the background. \u201cGuardians\u201d and \u201cDeadpool\u201d have done a lot of that, and it\u2019s just one more way in which \u201cSupergirl\u201d feels like a ripoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During one battle scene, the peppy tune is \u201cThe Middle\u201d (\u201cIt just takes some time!\u201d) by Jimmy Eat World.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Funny choice, that.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure new DC honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are surely feeling the pressure, sing it often.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything, everything will be just fine!
