The BBC also continues to celebrate The Music Is Black, with an incredible night of legends at Hackney Empire and DJ Spoony exploring the inaugural exhibition as part of the collaboration with V&amp;A East Museum.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, BBC Music will be at major festivals and events across the country including Radio 1 at Reading &amp; Leeds, 1Xtra Salutes Carnival, Asian Network Certified, Boomtown, Parklife, 6 Music at Green Man, Radio 1 in Ibiza and Malta as well as Radio 2 in the Park from Stirling in September with headliners including Chaka Khan and Simple Minds.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s biggest classical music festival, the BBC Proms returns to the Royal Albert Hall and Across the UK from 17 July with 86 concerts over eight weeks with performances from the finest orchestras from across the UK and around the world. Visiting ensembles include The Met Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Mahler Academy Orchestra and the Spanish National Orchestra . There will be special nights celebrating musical icons including Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye and the first ever Prog Rock Prom as well as weekend residencies in the North East of England and Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated nights on BBC Four will celebrate some of our biggest American artists including Linda Ronstadt, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, The Specials, Bee Gees, Sting, and more, while on BBC Two there will be dedicated nights on The Rolling Stones, Paul Heaton, Marvin Gaye and Queen.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Radio 2 puts folk music front and centre with the return of the award-winning 21st Century Folk with original new songs from renowned folk acts including Martin Simpson, Katherine Priddy, Eddi Reader and John Douglas, Passenger and Megson.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrating our commitment to supporting the next generation, BBC Introducing will be launching a series of major new partnerships designed to strengthen talent development in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Radio 1\u2019s Big Weekend has already achieved record-breaking viewing and listening figures, with more than 5.4 million requests across iPlayer and BBC Sounds and 8 million listeners tuning in on air.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"unmissableperformancesfromcharlixcxandsamsmith\">Unmissable performances from Charli xcx and Sam Smith<\/h2>\n<p>As part of the BBC\u2019s ongoing commitment to bringing audiences together through the very best in live music, BBC Music will deliver a series of unmissable performances from some of the world\u2019s biggest artists over the next six months.<\/p>\n<p>The first artists to feature in this exciting line-up are Charli xcx and Sam Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Filmed at locations across the UK, these exclusive live performances will offer audiences unique music moments they won\u2019t be able to experience anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>Full details will be announced soon.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6musicartistinresidenceaaa\">6 Music Artist in Residence: AAA<\/h2>\n<p>Coming to BBC iPlayer this summer are five new episodes of 6 Music Artist in Residence: AAA from Foo Fighters, Honey Dijon, James Blake, beabadoobee and Robyn. Recorded at Maida Vale Studios, 6 Music Artist in Residence AAA are exclusive films which see artists explore the creative process behind their music.<\/p>\n<p>Each artist will also present a series (4 x 60\u201d) of Artist in Residence for 6 Music and BBC Sounds, (9pm-1am), a journey into the musical soul of an artist which sees the host present a playlist of tracks, based around a different theme or mood.<\/p>\n<p>Foo Fighters\u2019 Artist in Residence AAA (iPlayer, 6am Monday 29th June) will see Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett break down two tracks from the band\u2019s twelfth studio album, Your Favourite Toy \u2013 Caught in the Echo and Child Actor &#8211; as well as fan favourite, The Pretender. They reveal how the songs came together and reflect on the band\u2019s enduring legacy. The band\u2019s Artist in Residence series for 6 Music and BBC Sounds (Monday 29th June, 6am on Sounds, 9pm-1am on 6 Music) will feature episodes on the themes of \u201c80s High School in Santa Barbara\u201d, \u201cWhy Doesn\u2019t Everyone Love These Songs\u201d, \u201cFor the Drive\u201d and \u201cGrowing up Virginia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Lamacq will be reflecting the Foo Fighter&#8217;s AAA special and looking back on Dave Grohl&#8217;s history at the BBC during his show on Monday 29th June (4-7pm).<\/p>\n<p>Foo Fighters say: \u201cBBC Maida Vale studios has been a home away from home for Foo Fighters for more than 30 years, going as far back as our first session in 1995. So we were excited to visit again to record our Artist in Residence AAA episode for 6 Music. It was a blast reliving the writing and recording of these songs \u2014 not to mention many incredible memories. We hope people have as much fun watching it as we did filming it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Honey Dijon\u2019s Artist in Residence: AAA (6am, Tuesday 30 June, iPlayer) sees Honey joined by her producer Luke Soloman to reveal how they made Honey\u2019s new album The Nightlife and its sources of inspiration. With special guest Greentea Peng, they also share their love of dance music in its many guises, discuss the magic of collaboration and tell the stories behind the tracks being born. Plus, Honey reveals what it was like to work on Beyonc\u00e9&#8217;s 2022 album, Renaissance. Honey\u2019s Artist in Residence audio series (6 Music, 9pm \u20131am) explores the music she loves from the 70s, 80s, 90s and present.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about Artist in Residence series for 6 Music, Honey Dijon says: &#8220;Four decades. Four shows. One story. From the underground foundations of the 70s to the sounds shaping dance floors today, this residency is a love letter to the music that made me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Blake\u2019s Artist in Residence: AAA (6am, Weds 1 July on iPlayer) is an exclusive look into the making of his new album, Trying Times. James is joined at Maida Vale by producer and Mount Kimbie co-founder Dom Maker to unpack the beats, riffs and lyrics behind the record. They discuss the art of sampling and curation, explore the layered meanings hidden in the words, and explain how they unexpectedly helped fund a church\u2019s new sound system. James\u2019 Artist in Residence audio series (BBC Sounds 6am \u2013 Weds 1st July and 6M 9pm-1am) features music ranging from ambient, to dance, to dubstep and more.<\/p>\n<p>In beabadoobee\u2019s Artist in Residence: AAA (iPlayer, 6am, Thursday 2 July), she\u2019ll be joined by singer, songwriter &amp; producer Shygirl to discuss the song Beaches, from her 2024 album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, as well her new single Sun Has Set, and Glue Song (released in 2023). Her Artist in Residence series available on BBC Sounds from 6am on Thursday 2nd July and broadcast on 6 Music that evening, 9pm-1am.<\/p>\n<p>In Robyn\u2019s Artist in Residence: AAA (iPlayer in July), together with a close collaborator, she reveals what went into the making of songs from her latest album, Sexistential alongside a classic track. Robyn\u2019s Artist in Residence audio series (BBC Sounds, 6am, Friday 3 July, 6 Music 9pm \u2013 1am) features song choices on her chosen themes of dance music, pop songwriting, R&amp;B and more.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the rest of the week (Tuesday 30 June \u2013 Friday 3 July) Huw Stephens will be catching up with some more of the artists involved and reflecting the AAA specials during his 4-7pm shows.<\/p>\n<p>All programmes are available on demand for 30 days after broadcast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Live music performance on iPlayer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Launching this summer, every week, BBC Music will showcase the best live music performances in a new destination on iPlayer, from never-before-seen sets to crowd favourites from the archives. Celebrating the finest moments in live music, from legendary festival stages to intimate venue performances and iconic TV appearances, this new weekly offer will have something for every music fan to enjoy.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"glastonbury\">Glastonbury<\/h2>\n<p>As Glastonbury takes a fallow year, on Saturday 27 June, BBC Music is giving music fans the opportunity to reflect on the festival\u2019s legacy by reliving classic performances in 40 Glastonbury Gems on BBC Two. 40 songs performed on the hallowed Worthy Farm stages over the years have been unearthed from the BBC archives for viewers to enjoy over the traditional Glastonbury weekend. This extended celebration spans from when the festival was first televised in 1994, right through to 2025 with recorded-live tracks from Adele, Amy Winehouse, Blondie, Blur, Dolly Parton, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Florence + The Machine, Johnny Cash, Kylie Minogue, Lizzo, Pet Shop Boys, Radiohead, R.E.M, Robbie Williams, The Rolling Stones, Stormzy, Sugababes and many more.<\/p>\n<p>To accompany this special, BBC iPlayer will be streaming The Glastonbury Channel with back-to-back Glastonbury sets from 12:00 on Saturday 27th June before simulcasting 40 Glastonbury Gems on BBC Two that night. From midday on Sunday 28th June, the channel returns to BBC iPlayer with more sets. Those whose performances will appear on BBC iPlayer across the two days include Coldplay (2024), RAYE (2025), Billie Eilish (2022), The Chemical Brothers (2019) and more. 40 Glastonbury Gems and all BBC iPlayer sets will be available on demand for 30 days after broadcast.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"documentariesandspecialprogramming\">Documentaries and Special Programming<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Madonna &amp; Graham<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graham Norton welcomes the incomparable Madonna in a world exclusive special for BBC One on Friday 26th June at 10.40pm and on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday 4th July, 6-8pm. Recorded at the legendary Koko in Camden, London \u2013 the stage that hosted Madonna\u2019s first-ever UK show in 1983 as well as the launch of her landmark 2005 album, Confessions on a Dance Floor &#8211; Madonna &amp; Graham sees Graham meet with Madonna for an intimate, in-depth discussion about her incredible life and celebrated career. Ahead of the release of her much-anticipated new album Confessions II in July, this rare interview promises to be an unmissable television event.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC One and Radio 2 programmes will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAM! 10 Days in China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This summer, BBC Two and BBC Music present the world exclusive terrestrial TV broadcast of WHAM! 10 Days in China, a 90-minute documentary film from Sony Music Vision, in association with Sony Music Entertainment UK, and Supercollider (a Zinc Media Company).<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, WHAM! were the first Western pop group to perform in communist China. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley\u2019s two concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou introduced live Western pop to Chinese audiences and marked a turning point for the band. For WHAM!, the tour was more than music; it was a bold move to capture American attention and launch them into global superstardom \u2013 and it worked.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on meticulously restored, newly digitised and never-before-seen archive footage, alongside interviews with those who experienced the tour firsthand, the film revisits this historic moment through the eyes of the band, their team and Chinese audiences encountering Western pop culture for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>A night of WHAM! and George Michael programming on BBC Two will accompany this documentary, and it will also be celebrated on Radio 2\u2019s Sounds of the 80s show (Saturdays, 6-8pm) which is presented by Gary Davies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jamal Edwards Documentary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BBC will be bringing a new feature documentary diving into the life and legacy of pioneering music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards. Produced by Ventureland, in association with Jamal Edwards\u2019s family and SBTV, the 90-minute documentary will follow his extraordinary rise to becoming one of the most influential figures in modern music and youth culture.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary will include never before seen footage and interviews with family, friends and artists who were close to Edwards, sharing personal stories, reflecting on his impact in the industry and exploring how he transformed SBTV from a grassroots YouTube channel into a global platform which helped launch the careers of international artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Dave and Jessie J.<\/p>\n<p>Ventureland has begun production on the landmark documentary, set to broadcast in 2027 with more information to be announced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bowie in Berlin: Finding Mr Jones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BBC Two and BBC iPlayer will celebrate David Bowie in autumn 2026 with Bowie in Berlin: Finding Mr Jones (1 x 90&#8242;), a documentary marking the 50th anniversary of Bowie\u2019s arrival in the German capital.<\/p>\n<p>A Mindhouse \/ Blackstar Films co-production, with Executive Producers Louis Theroux and Mandy Chang, and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Francis Whately (David Bowie: Finding Fame, David Bowie: The Last Five Years, David Bowie: Five Years), Bowie in Berlin: Finding Mr Jones tells the story of a Bowie you\u2019ve never seen, by exploring one of the most important periods of his life &#8211; when he turned his back on fame and success and disappeared from sight into the streets of Cold War Berlin, from 1976-1978.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 10 years after his death in 2016, the artist formerly known as Ziggy Stardust has become an idol of our age, and yet away from the fans and celebrities lining up to pay their homage, the reality of Bowie as a shy, introspective and vulnerable man, who often found fame intolerable, is largely forgotten. This film will change that.<\/p>\n<p>Whately tells the story of Bowie\u2019s Berlin years in Bowie\u2019s own words, as well as the words of four remarkable women who shared his life during this time \u2013 Bowie\u2019s Berlin muses, Clare Shenstone, Romy Haag, Sarah-Rena Hine and Sydne Rome. Each of these extraordinary women have their own unique insight into the singer\u2019s life, art and character, providing a secret history of Bowie\u2019s time in the city. These women saw a Bowie that nobody else saw, and all gave him something different, helping his regeneration into an artist who no longer needed to hide behind characters, but was happy to perform as himself \u2013 David Robert Jones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rise and Fall of The Smiths<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday 13 July, BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds present The Rise and Fall of the Smiths, an eight-part podcast series, presented by Steve Lamacq and Elizabeth Alker.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast tells the story of the iconic band&#8217;s remarkable ascent and dramatic collapse in their own words, through four decades of BBC material, including rare and previously unheard recordings.<\/p>\n<p>The series draws on archive BBC interviews with band members Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, as well as Factory Records co-founder Tony Wilson, producers Stephen Street and Grant Showbiz, Jo Slee and Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records and The Smiths\u2019 manager Joe Moss. It explores how The Smiths created a foundational blueprint for modern indie rock and Britpop in five years, and how their unparalleled, meteoric rise led to an acrimonious, bitter fallout.<\/p>\n<p>The Rise and Fall of The Smiths is the latest instalment of BBC Sounds&#8217; multi award-winning The Rise and Fall of&#8230; series. The franchise has attracted millions of listeners with its compelling deep dives into the biggest stories in music, from the Sex Pistols and Madchester to Oasis, Britpop and Indie Sleaze.<\/p>\n<p>The Rise &amp; Fall of The Smiths is released on BBC Sounds and RSS on Monday 13 July 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deep Dive into The Strokes: Is This It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday 29 July, 6 Music will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Strokes\u2019 debut album Is This It. Between 7am-7pm, we will play the whole album in full, hear stories from famous friends and fans of the band, and celebrate the year of its release with back-to-back tunes from 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Music Fix Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Friday 10th July is New Music Fix Friday on 6 Music and from 5am-9pm, Amy Lam\u00e9 (sitting in for Chris Hawkins, 5-7am), Nick Grimshaw (7-10am), Lauren Laverne (10am-1pm), Craig Charles (1-4pm), Emily Pilbeam (sitting in for Huw Stephens, 4-7pm), and Femi Koleoso (The People\u2019s Party, 7-9pm) will be celebrating the station\u2019s favourite music that has been released so far this year. Guests appearing during the day include London-based rapper Jeshi, Brighton rockers Lime Garden and noise rock band Mandy, Indiana. There will also be a session from Ipswich rock band Basement, plus plenty of tracks from the likes of Madra Salach, Mitski, Peaches, Vince Staples and Westside Cowboy. Across the week (Monday 6th \u2013 Friday 10th July), there will be sessions from Eaves Wilder, Chloe Slater, Ibibio Sound Machine and Show Me the Body, live tracks from Dove Ellis, 6 Music\u2019s weekend presenters will share their favourite tracks from 2026, and there will be a new 6 Music Artist in Residence series from American singer and cellist, Kelsey Lu (Monday 6th \u2013 Thursday 9th July, 11pm-12am).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dedicatednightsonbbctwoandbbcfour\"><strong>Dedicated nights on BBC Two and BBC Four<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Across the summer and beyond, dedicated nights on BBC Four will celebrate American artists. Viewers will have another chance to see programmes including Words and Music: American Stories (Parts 1 and 2), The Old Grey Whistle Test specials with Janis Ian and Jackson Browne, and The Late Show: Rosanne Cash, Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter. There will also be a new BBC Two compilation, 50 American Music Icons at the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Four will also broadcast concerts from Blondie (at the Apollo Theatre, Glasgow, 1979), Jimmy Webb (at the Paris Theatre, London, 1971), and Elvis Costello (a Later\u2026 with Jools Holland special from 1996). Additionally, the channel will feature archive nights dedicated to Linda Ronstadt, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, The Specials, Bee Gees, Sting, and more. Meanwhile, acts celebrated with dedicated nights on BBC Two over the coming months include The Rolling Stones, Paul Heaton, Marvin Gaye \u2013 including a broadcast of the Marvin Gaye: Prince of Soul Prom (which will also air on Radio 2 and Radio 3) \u2013 Diana Ross, and Queen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greatest BBC Music Moments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coming to BBC Two in the summer is a 90-minute celebration of the BBC\u2019s many magical music moments. BBC presenters will curate their favourites. Expect classic performances from BBC programmes including The Old Grey Whistle Test and Glastonbury, alongside hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BBC Radio 2 &#8211; 21st Century Folk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BBC Radio 2 is putting folk music front and centre with the return of the award-winning 21st Century Folk, for its fourth year. Five renowned folk acts are each writing and composing a song about five Radio 2 listeners whose lives have been touched or transformed by sport.<\/p>\n<p>21st Century Folk is partly inspired by the classic BBC Radio Ballads which were created by Charles Parker, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger during the late 1950s. These landmark programmes described the lives of real working people through their own words and original songs. The Radio Ballads format was also revived by Radio 2 during the 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>The folk singer-songwriters taking part this year are Martin Simpson, Katherine Priddy, Eddi Reader and John Douglas, Passenger (AKA Mike Rosenberg), and Megson.<\/p>\n<p>Listeners can hear the songs, contributors and songwriters of 21st Century Folk exclusively on BBC Sounds on Monday 29 June at 12.01am. From Monday 29 June until Sunday 5 July, Radio 2 will mark the occasion with a week of folk music programming. The stories and songs will be heard each day on the Jeremy Vine Show, presented by Tina Daheley (weekdays, noon-2pm). On Saturday 15 August, Charlie Tee will host a Boomtown special of the Radio 1 Drum &amp; Bass Show, featuring highlights from the iconic Lion&#8217;s Den stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Essential Mix will also make its Boomtown debut with a special visualised set from Four Tet.
