\u201cSaturday Night Live<\/a>\u201d alum Leslie Jones didn\u2019t always find her time on the show enjoyable, particularly when it came to the characters she would portray in sketches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Speaking recently on \u201cThe Sam Sanders Show<\/a>,\u201d the comedian reflected on what she called a \u201cfrustrating\u201d experience during her five-season stint, remembering how the \u201cSNL<\/a>\u201d writers would often typecast her as aggressive and violent characters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt was kind of frustrating that they would always make me the girl that was angry and beating up people or in love with a white boy,\u201d Jones said. \u201cThey just always would make me angry or I\u2019m fighting somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Jones initially didn\u2019t push back on those negative portrayals because she said she \u201cwanted to be on the show\u201d and \u201cdidn\u2019t think that that was happening\u201d in the moment until she noticed the pattern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cEvery time I would get a sketch, I was like, \u2018OK, who am I beating up this week?\u2019\u201d she noted. \u201cI just started getting frustrated with [the writers]. I was like, \u2018Stop writing me like that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n But despite her protests, Jones said the writers maintained that approach because they believed it would make her \u201csuccessful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThey\u2019re like \u2026 \u2018When you leave here, you\u2019ll be able to make [a career],\u2019\u201d Jones recalled. \u201cNo. I don\u2019t want to be Chevy Chase. I don\u2019t want to be whoever. I want to be Leslie. I want to do everything. And I wanted to go across the board with everything, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n When asked whether she believes \u201cSNL\u201d was a \u201chealthy place to be a Black comic,\u201d Jones simply said, \u201cI think that it is the machine that it is.
