Singer Gary Numan<\/strong> is looking back at his first interaction with his now-wife, Gemma O\u2019Neill<\/strong>, when she was a 12-year-old fan of his music.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Times<\/em><\/a> published on Wednesday, June 24, Numan, 68, explained that he met O\u2019Neill, now 58, at a fan event around 1980. He was 22 at the time, while she was 10 years his junior<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The now-married couple reconnected years later, when O\u2019Neill was 18 and he was 28. The \u201cCars\u201d singer said he contacted a fan club that O\u2019Neill was part of in 1992 so that he could get her phone number and offer his condolences for her mother\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how I attracted her, which I think is illegal now,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n

Recalling the phone exchange, Numan said O\u2019Neill \u201cput the phone down\u201d because \u201cshe thought it was somebody playing a cruel trick.\u201d When he called her back, she quizzed the former Tubeway Army frontman to make sure it was really him.<\/p>\n

Numan then took O\u2019Neill on their first date.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took her to a Little Chef because I\u2019m very down to earth. I don\u2019t do all that flash, rich man, pop star stuff,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Numan and O\u2019Neill tied the knot in 1997 and went on to welcome daughters Raven<\/strong>, 23, Persia<\/strong>, 21, and Echo,<\/strong> 19.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Neill previously shared her perspective on the start of her romance with Numan in a 1997 interview with The Independent<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy big brother Shane was always buying albums. One day, I went past his bedroom and saw the back cover of Gary\u2019s first Tubeway Army album,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI thought, \u2018I like the look of that bloke,\u2019 so I took the album, started playing it \u2014 and I was hooked. I was a huge music fan: him, Toyah, and Siouxsie and the Banshees were my people.\u201d<\/p>\n
