Walk down Alameda\u2019s memory lane, listen to live music in a garden, see a classic animated film, and help Rhythmix Cultural Works bid farewell to an art exhibition<\/h2>\n

School may be out for summer, but learning is a lifelong pursuit! Get into the humanities this weekend without enrolling for a whole semester\u2014or leaving the island. Start the weekend with a Closing Reception and Artist Talk at the Artists of the African Diaspora<\/a> exhibit at Rhythmix Cultural Works on Friday, June 26. The same evening, indulge in some nostalgic animation with a free showing of The Aristocats<\/em><\/a> at Alameda Point Multi-Purpose Field. On Saturday, June 27, history-lovers are in for a doubly-fascinating event<\/a> including a tour of the Meyers House and Garden plus a walking tour of the surrounding neighborhood. The same day, Alameda Walks<\/a> will set off on a free tour of the Crab Cove area to discuss the famous Neptune Beach amusement park. And on Sunday, June 28, return to the Meyers House and Garden for a special live music event, Music in the Garden with Timothy Garry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Artists of the African Diaspora \u2013 Closing Reception and Artist Talk<\/h3>\n

Friday, June 26<\/h4>\n

Join Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Avenue, as they bid a fond farewell to the Artists of the African Diaspora exhibition, which has been in the K Gallery since May 7. The Closing Reception and Artist Talk<\/a> is scheduled from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, June 26.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis exhibit\u2019s eclectic mix of diasporic cultures and techniques embodies the very essence of Art of the African Diaspora\u2019s<\/a> mission and program,\u201d shares Rhythmix<\/a>. The Art of the African Diaspora satellite exhibit features works from a variety of mediums and techniques by 9 local artists: Eric Murphy (Curator), Victoria Bankole, Stacy Mootoo, Xioneida Ruiz, TheArthur Wright, Chamia LaRae, Malcolm Ryder, Joanne Johnson, and Val Kai.<\/p>\n

Starlight Movies in the Parks: The Aritocats<\/em><\/h3>\n

Friday, June 26<\/h4>\n

Indulge is some classic Disney charm on Friday, June 26, at the Starlight Movies in the Park summer series. Catch a free showing of The Aristocats<\/em><\/a> at Alameda Point Multi-Purpose Field, 1101 West Redline Avenue, courtesy of Alameda Recreation and Park Department (ARPD).<\/p>\n

Pre-show festivities start at 6:30 p.m. with games and crafts for kids. As always, the movie will start between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m., depending on darkness. Snacks and food will be available for purchase\u2014proceeds support the Alameda Youth Committee<\/a> and Teen Programs.<\/p>\n

Pre-registration is not necessary. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. Kindly leave all barbecue grills, alcoholic beverages, and pets at home. The Aristocats<\/em> is rated G.<\/p>\n

A Walk in the Neighborhood by the Alameda Museum<\/h3>\n

Saturday, June 27<\/h4>\n

Grab your best walking shoes and get ready for a double-dipping historical tour at A Walk in the Neighborhood<\/a> with the Alameda Museum. The tour starts at 11 a.m. at the beautiful Meyers House & Garden, 2021 Alameda Avenue.<\/p>\n

Attendees will start the day with historian Dennis Evanosky on a walk through the historic neighborhood. Learn why the area was a popular area for development in the late 19th century, and what may have enticed the Meyers to become homebuyers.<\/p>\n

After the 60-minute neighborhood tour, attendees are invited to dine al fresco by bringing their own picnic lunch to the garden. If you\u2019d prefer to purchase a bite to eat, you can take a short walk to nearby restaurants such as Blue Dot Cafe<\/a>, 1910 Encinal Ave, or Marti\u2019s Place<\/a>, 1905 1\/2 Encinal Ave.<\/p>\n

After lunch, attendees are invited to join the Meyers House and Gardens for their monthly open hours beginning at 1 p.m. Explore the beautiful 1897 Colonial Revival home, its surrounding gardens, and even a carriage house. Tickets for this double tour are available online for $20<\/a>. Cash payment will also be accepted at the time of the tour.<\/p>\n

Alameda Walks: Neptune Beach<\/h3>\n

Saturday, June 27<\/h4>\n

On Saturday, June 27, take an educational stroll with Alameda Walks beginning in the grassy area in front of the Doug Siden Visitor Center<\/a> at Crab Cove, 1252 McKay Avenue. This week\u2019s walk<\/a> will begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.<\/p>\n

The famous Neptune Beach amusement park, known as the \u201cConey Island of the West,\u201d once attracted thousands and thousands of visitors from the Bay Area and beyond. The park only operated from 1917 to 1939, but generations of Alamedans remember its name\u2014and daydream about life with an amusement park on the island. Historian Dennis Evanosky will guide attendees through the footprints of roller coasters, attractions, and fun summer days of yore.<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s tour marks the third of 12 guided Alameda Walks tours<\/a> around Alameda and Bay Farm scheduled through October. Alameda Walks are sponsored by ARPD. Registration is not required for these free events. Kindly leave pets at home. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes, use sun protection, and bring water to stay hydrated.<\/p>\n

Music in the Garden at the Meyers House and Garden<\/h3>\n

Sunday, June 28, 2026<\/h4>\n

Spend a relaxing afternoon listening to live music at Music in the Garden with Timothy Garry<\/a> at the Meyers House & Garden, 2021 Alameda Avenue. The event is scheduled from 4 until 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

Timothy Garry<\/a> is a guitarist, vocalist, and music instructor based in the Bay Area. Expect to be serenaded by Spanish guitar stylings. Get a sneak peek of Garry\u2019s style on his YouTube page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Guests are welcome to explore the architecture exhibit before the concert. Alameda Museum docents will be available to answer any questions you may have about the estate and the display.<\/p>\n

Tickets are $25 per person and are available online<\/a> in advance. Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are included. Please bring a digital or physical copy of your receipt of purchase to present at the door. Proceeds help to maintain the Meyers House & Garden as an historic site open to the public.<\/p>\n
