Alex Cooper addressed the allegations that her company is a toxic workplace and that her husband emotionally abuses his employees by saying that women are held to a higher standard in her industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think if you walk the halls, there are so many people that are so happy to work at this company,\u201d Cooper told The Wall Street Journal in a video interview<\/a> published Wednesday about her media company, Unwell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI think, unfortunately, being a woman in this industry is extremely difficult because you\u2019re held to a complete different standard. Whether it\u2019s a smear campaign being created for someone\u2019s narrative \u2014 whatever it be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI think when you read lies about yourself … it\u2019s hard. But I think the reason that I\u2019ve had success in this industry is I have really thick skin, and I\u2019m going to keep pushing forward,\u201d Cooper added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Vanity Fair published a report<\/a> earlier this month alleging that Cooper, host of the \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d podcast, leads a toxic workplace. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The report cited 40 women, many of whom are current or former employees at Unwell, who said that despite Cooper\u2019s portrayal of herself as a feminist, the company is actually run by mean girls. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The report also alleged that Cooper\u2019s husband, Matt Kaplan, who helps run Unwell, is Cooper\u2019s \u201cpuppeteer\u201d and has referred to employees as \u201cstupid\u201d or \u201cretarded.\u201d The report also alleged that Kaplan has made employees uncomfortable with his questions about their sex lives and his lingering hand on their thighs or backs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Attorney Bryan Freedman responded to Vanity Fair on behalf of Cooper, Kaplan, and Unwell, writing, \u201cIf the Story so much as suggests any sexual impropriety on Mr. Kaplan\u2019s part, I will make it my life\u2019s mission to ensure Vanity Fair\u2019s days are numbered.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Monday, Cooper told the Journal not to believe the allegations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI will say that building a startup, there is so much growth that comes with that, and I am extremely proud of what we have built at Unwell,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I will just kind of leave it at \u2018don\u2019t believe everything that you read on the internet\u2019 \u2014 but I think everyone knows that at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Vanity Fair\u2019s report followed an online spat<\/a> between Cooper and rival podcaster Alix Earle, who was once signed to Unwell and had reposted a TikTok calling Cooper an \u201cambulance chaser.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
