Rather than allowing a standard trial by combat to settle the matter, Richard intervened at the very last minute, choosing instead to banish Bolingbroke from the kingdom. The political situation rapidly deteriorated following the death of Bolingbroke&#8217;s wealthy father, John of Gaunt. <\/p>\n<p>Desperate for funds to finance a military campaign in Ireland, Richard made the fateful error of seizing Gaunt&#8217;s massive estates and stripping the exiled Bolingbroke of his rightful inheritance. This direct assault on noble property rights deeply alarmed the English aristocracy, instantly uniting them against the crown.<\/p>\n<p>Taking advantage of Richard\u2019s military absence in Ireland, Bolingbroke invaded England in 1399 with a small force that quickly snowballed into a massive army of disgruntled noblemen. Returning to a kingdom that had entirely turned against him, a politically isolated Richard was forced to abdicate his crown. Bolingbroke subsequently ascended the throne as King Henry IV, bringing a decisive end to the direct Plantagenet dynasty and establishing the new House of Lancaster. <\/p>\n<p>Imprisoned deep within the walls of Pomfret Castle, Richard died early the following year\u2014likely through forced starvation ordered by the new regime.
