First came a completely new Man of Steel (David Corenswet), who starred in 2025\u2019s successful reboot, \u201cSuperman.\u201d The film featured a short appearance by Supergirl, now played by \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d actress Milly Alcock. She played it a little drunk, sassy and edgy, making it a nice set-up for her own film, which has just opened in theaters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The film begins with the young lady celebrating her 23<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday. She\u2019s doing shots, swearing, and is clearly a little troubled. She\u2019s also smart and very capable of handling herself. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Alcock demonstrated her acting chops in \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d and does so again here. She smoothly tackles all the physical challenges of the role, while still being vulnerable and conflicted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The script was written by Ana Nogueira, a former actress-turned playwright-turned-screenwriter who has been writing for multiple DC movie projects. Also listed as writers are Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 eLHQj bTwCzL full-width\" aria-labelledby=\"_R_efpeda_\" id=\"AEGVQUMRANHINBJTPMT7MLJMAI\"><figcaption id=\"_R_efpeda_\" class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 izaBwj\"><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">Matthias Schoenaerts in &#8220;Supergirl&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 fhZqFm\"> (Courtesy of DC Entertainment &amp; Warner Bros Pictures)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The story unfolds at a smooth and brisk pace. We meet the main villain: a stud-faced psycho named \u201cKrem of the Yellow Hills,\u201d played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who was seen previously in \u201cRed Sparrow.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He and his henchmen kill the family of a teenage girl named Ruthye, who embarks on a mission of revenge that leads her to form an alliance with Supergirl. Ruthye is well-played by British actress Eve Ridley, who appeared in the Netflix series \u201c3 Body Problem.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Also showing up periodically in the film is Jason Momoa (\u201cAquaman\u201d), who seems delighted to play an over-the-top, extremely-violent, alien mercenary\/bounty hunter who proves to be an ally. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 eLHQj bTwCzL full-width\" aria-labelledby=\"_R_ifpeda_\" id=\"VOPFMH3DBNCURM4JIBMW5STTNM\"><figcaption id=\"_R_ifpeda_\" class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 izaBwj\"><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">Jason Momoa in &#8220;Supergirl&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 fhZqFm\"> (Courtesy of DC Entertainment &amp; Warner Bros Pictures)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Director Craig Gillespie (\u201cI, Tonya\u201d and \u201cCruella\u201d) manages to stage multiple big fight scenes, while also weaving in a series of flashbacks that tell the origin story of Supergirl and how she came to follow her cousin to Earth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">By the way, \u201cSuperman\u201d himself (David Corenswet) does appear multiple times, as does Krypto, the wildly popular dog from the first film. An attack on the pooch is a major plot driver in this movie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The writing is very clever, with some excellent lines. When the pessimistic Supergirl is asked about the difference between her and the Man of Steel, she replies: \u201cHe sees the good in people. I see the truth.\u201d The script also deftly handles the question of why the heroine is known as Super-GIRL while her cousin is Super-MAN.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 eLHQj bTwCzL full-width\" aria-labelledby=\"_R_mfpeda_\" id=\"2ANF5OBGSFCE3HKYKUMCOFRZRQ\"><figcaption id=\"_R_mfpeda_\" class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 izaBwj\"><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">Milly Alcock and Matthias Schoenaerts in &#8220;Supergirl&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 fhZqFm\"> (Photo by Parisa Taghizadeh)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">There are a number of elements here that may feel familiar. The tough, extreme-looking bad guys look like leftovers from a Mad Max film, while some of the action sequences feel very inspired by those movies. The multiple spaceships are reminiscent of \u201cStar Wars,\u201d as is a big cantina fight scene filled with aliens. And yet another battle sequence brings back memories of \u201cDeadpool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cSupergirl\u201d is often a very dark film. It\u2019s violent and pushes the envelope of what many might expect from a superhero movie. I was expecting more to happen in this film, which runs just 1 hour, 48 minutes, one of the shortest DC releases. Instead, it concludes with a rather abrupt ending that had me thinking, \u201cAre they saving material for the next one?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cSupergirl\u201d has some nice moments, and while it\u2019s not a bad film, it\u2019s not a great one either. I am hopeful for the follow-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><i>Note: For fans of staying through the credits for bonus clips, don\u2019t bother.
