YIZO Yizo star Meshack Mavuso shares his secret to evolving and staying relevant in the ever-changing acting industry.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old actor and director, who has been on the small screen since 1998 and appeared in many top TV productions, also offers advice to young stars on how to remain relevant.<\/p>\n

From playing lead roles as Vusi Moletsane in the popular soapie Isidingo from 1998 to 2020, and as Javas Nyembe in the drama series Yizo Yizo from 1999 to 2004, he remains active and relevant in the industry.<\/p>\n

Meshack recently played a lead role on Smoke & Mirrors as the heartless mayor before it was cancelled by e.tv a few months ago. <\/p>\n

But he’s bouncing back with another lead role on e.tv’s new show, eGagasini: Waves of Change, set to debut on Monday, 29 June.<\/p>\n

He told Daily Sun that his big secret to staying relevant is that he doesn’t create art for the sake of it.<\/p>\n

“I don’t do art for fame, and I don’t do art for money. I love the art inside me, not myself in art. That’s the problem we have now \u2014 too many celebrities on our screens and far too few actors.<\/p>\n

“I’m not a celebrity. I’m a vessel. For me, acting is a calling to go out and change people’s lives because the characters we play change and influence people’s lives. That’s why I remain humble and still working. <\/p>\n

“Not that I know too much, but I respect my work. I know there are people who can do it better than I can because of the discipline I have for my craft. That’s why I’m still here,” he said.<\/p>\n

Meshack’s advice to the younger generation is simple: don’t act for fame, do it because you love it.<\/p>\n

“We can see when someone is acting without love on TV. We love this, and that’s why we are asking the young generation not to come here because they are bored,” he said.<\/p>\n

Talking about his character, Senzo Dube, a legendary music producer and founder of Umlilo Records, Meshack said he enjoys playing a different character from the serious ones he normally portrays.<\/p>\n

“He’s basically DJ Tira. He is from Umlazi, a kwaito star who decided to start a music label. Because I have been playing serious characters who wear suits, this one is not serious.<\/p>\n

“Playing this character is not far from myself because in every character you play, you include a bit of yourself in it. And you go out there \u2014 look, I have hung out with DJ Tira, DJ Sbu and other music producers, and I know their behaviour,” he said.<\/p>\n
