Buckingham Palace has published a revised description of
\nKing Charles III’s constitutional role, stating that the monarch, as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, is responsible for protecting “the space for Faith” within Britain’s “multi-faith nation<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

The updated definition appears in the Royal Family\u2019s annual financial review, the Sovereign Grant Report 2025-26, and expands on the monarch\u2019s responsibilities compared with last year\u2019s version.<\/p>\n

Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith<\/h2>\n

The previous report described the King simply as the \u201cHead of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith.\u201d The latest edition adds a broader emphasis on religious inclusion, stating: \u201cHis Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The revised wording reflects King Charles\u2019 long-standing commitment to interfaith dialogue, a cause he has championed since his time as Prince of Wales. Throughout his public life, the King has regularly engaged with representatives of Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Orthodox and other religious communities in the UK and overseas, often speaking about cooperation among the Abrahamic faiths.<\/p>\n

It further adds: \u201cHis Majesty also has a special role in bringing communities and faiths together, engaging with them across the regions and nations of the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n
