Actor Ann Dowd reflected on President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s first election win and remembered what her \u201cHandmaid\u2019s Tale\u201d co-star told her over text message the morning after.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe had just been elected,\u201d Dowd recalled on Jesse Tyler Ferguson<\/a>\u2019s podcast \u201cDinner\u2019s On Me,\u201d Entertainment Weekly reported<\/a>. \u201cI remember when we were shooting early on… that night before he was elected, I remember thinking, \u2018This can\u2019t be. This is going in the wrong direction.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The next morning, she immediately texted actor Elisabeth Moss. At the time, they were still in production on Hulu\u2019s hit series \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale,\u201d an adaptation of Margaret Atwood\u2019s dystopian novel of the same name. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI woke up, opened the door, The New York Times on the floor, announcing his win,\u201d Dowd continued. \u201cSo I texted Lizzie Moss, and I said, \u2018What are we going to do? This can\u2019t be.\u2019 She wrote back, \u2018Don\u2019t let the bastards grind you down.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That last line \u2014 which Moss wrote in Latin \u2014 is a famous one from the Hulu series. \u201cNolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum\u201d appeared in Atwood\u2019s novel as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale\u201d premiered just three months after Trump was inaugurated in 2017. The six-season series was set in a totalitarian regime where women, or handmaids, were subject to childbearing slavery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dowd starred as Aunt Lydia, who oversaw the handmaids; Moss portrayed June, a mother who tried to escape to Canada with her husband and daughter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It became a timely sensation, used by political activists to protest the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Hulu series aired its final episode last May. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In April, the sequel to the series, \u201cThe Testaments,\u201d began streaming on Hulu. It follows two teens as they navigate Aunt Lydia\u2019s prep school for future wives. Ann Dowd reprises her role from \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale,\u201d and Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday also star.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
