Toy Story 5 <\/em>won big at the box office in its second weekend with a $70 million domestic take and $159 globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n D.C. and Warner Bros.’ standalone superheroine flick, Supergirl<\/em>, stumbled to No. 2 in its debut, earning $38 million domestically with a budget of over $170 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Next weekend, Buzz Lightyear and the Girl of Steel will take on Minions & Monsters <\/em>and the historical drama Young Washington<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n It’s a bird! it’s a plane! No, it’s another disappointing debut for D.C. and Warner Bros.<\/p>\n With the full force of both studios’ marketing departments at its back, Supergirl<\/em><\/a> failed to launch at the box office<\/a> this weekend. The standalone super-flick starring Milly Alcock<\/a> as the titular heroine didn’t bomb, but its $38 million domestic and $68 million global takes (per Rentrak) fall short of both projections and pricey budgetary estimates.<\/p>\n Supergirl <\/em>was forecast to to earn at least $50 million from its Stateside opening this weekend. That was already concerning, given the film’s estimated budget of $170 million \u2014 well within normal range for a tentpole superhero title, but high for a character that hasn’t been tested solo on the big screen in over 40 years. It should be noted that 1984’s Supergirl<\/em>, starring Helen Slater, bombed at the box office, recouping only $14 million of its $35 million budget and earning costar Faye Dunaway a nomination for Worst Actress at the Razzies.<\/p>\n Milly Alcock’s take on the character was introduced in last year’s Superman<\/em><\/a>, which represented a much-needed hit for D.C. and Warners. But this follow-up earned less than one third of its progenitor’s domestic opening take of $125 million.<\/p>\n
