Producers have confirmed the musical\u2019s planned Sydney season, due to start on August 1st, will not go ahead. The show will instead wrap up on July 19th in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by Adrienne Shelly\u2019s beloved film, <em>Waitress<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of Jenna (Bassingthwaighte)\u00a0a small-town waitress and expert pie maker trapped in a difficult marriage who dreams of escape. When a baking contest and unexpected romance present new opportunities, Jenna discovers that change might be closer than she imagined, supported by her fellow waitresses in a tale of resilience and self-discovery.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement sent to <em>Rolling Stone AU\/NZ<\/em>, <em>Waitress<\/em> producer John Frost (of Crossroads Live) said a combination of cost-of-living pressures, higher interest rates and broader economic uncertainty had made the production financially unviable beyond Melbourne, despite positive audience response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we remain incredibly proud of the production and grateful for the dedication and passion of everyone involved, the challenging economic conditions currently facing audiences have had a significant impact on the live entertainment industry,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cUnfortunately, we have not been immune to these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst audience enthusiasm for our work remained strong, attendance levels and box office have not been sufficient to support the cost of the production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ticket holders for the Sydney season will be contacted by Ticketmaster for refunds, according to the musical\u2019s website. \u201cWe understand that this is disappointing news and we sincerely thank you for your understanding and ongoing support,\u201d a statement reads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\"> Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Waitress<\/em> is the latest Broadway hit to fall victim to rising costs in Australia, following last week\u2019s news of <em>Beetlejuice the Musical<\/em>, which <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/beetlejuice-the-musical-axes-remaining-australian-tour-dates-97429\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similarly cancelled the remainder of its Australian tour<\/a>. The production will now conclude in Brisbane on July 5th, with scheduled seasons in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney no longer going ahead.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, producers Michael Cassel Group cited the \u201clogistical realities\u201d of touring a production of that scale across Australia, also pointing to rising operating costs and a more cautious consumer spending environment.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <em>Back to the Future: The Musical<\/em> was canned in January despite plans for a national tour.
