At least six new Common Combat Vessels will be built for the Royal Navy under the Defence Investment Plan, delivering the UK\u2019s most advanced maritime air defence capability and keeping British shipyards working for decades to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n UK MoD press release<\/em><\/p>\n The Common Combat Vessels (CCVs) will replace the current fleet of six Type 45 destroyers,\u00a0with delivery expected from the early 2030s. Unlike its predecessors, the\u00a0new warship\u00a0will act as a control hub for uncrewed systems\u00a0\u2013\u00a0extending the Navy\u2019s reach,\u00a0resilience\u00a0and firepower without a proportional increase in crew or cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n Due to be outlined in the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan, these new ships will\u00a0replace earlier plans for a Type 83 destroyer. Rather than concentrating capability in a small number of large, expensive ships, the Royal Navy\u2019s shift to a hybrid\u00a0navy will\u00a0mix crewed and uncrewed capabilities and be\u00a0more\u00a0suited to the pace and nature of modern warfare.\u00a0The funding announced in the DIP allows the National Armaments Director Group to commence the design work that will underpin the fundamental shift in how to deliver Air Defence at and from the sea.<\/p>\n When in service, these CCVs\u00a0will\u00a0work\u00a0alongside eight Type 26 and five Type 31\u00a0crewed\u00a0frigates,\u00a0as well as Type 91 uncrewed missile platforms, Type 92 uncrewed underwater sensing platforms, Type 93 Extra-Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles and Type\u00a094\u00a0uncrewed sensor platforms,\u00a0representing a\u00a0once in a generation investment in new\u00a0maritime capability.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n It will\u00a0also\u00a0sustain and grow the UK\u2019s shipbuilding sector, providing new work for British shipyards\u00a0and\u00a0maintaining\u00a0vital skills.
