DETROIT<\/strong> \u2013 DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital is taking patient care beyond the hospital walls and into the heart of the Detroit community.<\/p>\n

The hospital hosted its second annual health fair Saturday, offering free health screenings, groceries, entertainment and a chance to speak directly with doctors \u2014 no appointment needed.<\/p>\n

Gone are the scrubs and doctor coats.<\/p>\n

The casual outdoor setting under large tents near the hospital\u2019s main entrance drew guests looking to get a quick but meaningful health check.<\/p>\n

Free screenings bring health awareness to the neighborhood<\/b><\/h3>\n

Attendees could get checked for blood pressure, diabetes and body mass index (BMI), as well as undergo mini pulmonary function testing.<\/p>\n

A mobile dentist was also on site.<\/p>\n

Roderick Johnson, who attended the event, said his results were a mixed bag.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlood pressure is good\u2026sugar is up a little bit,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

Keith Curry, director of Pulmonary Services and Neurodiagnostic at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, said the event\u2019s purpose goes beyond the individual.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important for the community because health is wealth. So, if our community is healthy \u2013 we\u2019re all healthy,\u201d Curry said.<\/p>\n

Skip the waiting room, ask a doctor<\/b><\/h3>\n

One of the fair\u2019s most popular features was the \u201cAsk-a-Doc\u201d component, which allowed visitors to discuss health concerns with physicians in a relaxed, conversational setting \u2014 no co-pays, no appointments, no waiting rooms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to get my blood pressure checked because it\u2019s been a little elevated. Make sure I\u2019m not diabetic. Things like that,\u201d one attendee said.<\/p>\n

Food, fun entertainment round out the day<\/b><\/h3>\n

Forgotten Harvest provided free, nutritious groceries to guests, while the first 100 attendees scored a free food truck meal. Nearly 40 health and community-related vendors were also present.<\/p>\n

The Detroit Youth Choir performed while other entertainment also included a DJ, face painters, a balloon artist and the Detroit Fire Clown Patrol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
