The Duke of Kent\u2019s appearance at Wimbledon on the opening day of
\nthis year\u2019s Championships carried an added poignancy as it marked
\nhis first visit to the All England Club since the death of his
\nwife, Katharine, the Duchess of Kent.<\/p>\n
The Duchess died in September 2025 at the age of 92, bringing to
\nan end one of the Royal Family\u2019s longest and most distinctive
\npartnerships. For generations of tennis fans, she became one of the
\ndefining faces of Wimbledon, presenting trophies to champions and
\noffering moments of warmth that became part of the tournament\u2019s
\nhistory.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the Duke took his place in the Royal Box on Centre
\nCourt as Wimbledon got underway, accompanied by Lady Susan Hussey.
\nWhile the Championships looked much as they always do, there was an
\nunmistakable sense that one of its most familiar figures was
\nmissing.<\/p>\n
For decades, the Duchess of Kent was synonymous with Wimbledon.
\nAs patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, she
\nregularly presented the trophies to the men\u2019s and women\u2019s singles
\nchampions. Her compassion was perhaps best remembered in 1993 when
\nshe comforted Jana Novotn\u00e1 after the Czech player broke down in
\ntears following her heartbreaking defeat to Steffi Graf in the
\nLadies\u2019 Singles Final. The image remains one of Wimbledon\u2019s most
\nenduring moments.<\/p>\n
Yet Katharine was never a conventional royal.<\/p>\n
After marrying Prince Edward at York Minster in 1961, she became
\none of the busiest members of the Royal Family, undertaking
\nengagements across the United Kingdom and around the world.
\nHowever, in the 1990s she chose a very different path.<\/p>\n
In 1994, she was received into the Roman Catholic Church, having
\nfirst discussed the decision with Queen Elizabeth II. Soon
\nafterwards, she gradually withdrew from royal duties before
\nembarking on an altogether different career as a music teacher at a
\nprimary school in Hull.<\/p>\n
For ten years, pupils knew her simply as \u201cMrs Kent\u201d, unaware
\nthey were being taught by a duchess. It was a role she embraced
\nwith characteristic humility, later joking that she had \u201cended up
\nteaching in Hull\u201d.<\/p>\n
Her desire for a quieter life extended to her royal status. In
\n2002, she formally asked Queen Elizabeth II if she could stop using
\nthe style of \u201cHer Royal Highness\u201d, preferring instead to be known
\nsimply as Katharine Kent.<\/p>\n
When Buckingham Palace announced her death, The King and Queen
\nled tributes, praising her lifelong devotion to charitable causes,
\nher love of music and her empathy for young people.<\/p>\n
Although the Duchess had stepped away from public life many
\nyears before her death, her connection with Wimbledon never faded.
\nFor countless spectators, she remained one of the tournament\u2019s most
\nrecognisable royal figures.<\/p>\n
