From self-producing hit podcasts like \u201cBald Brothers\u201d to launching independent, sold-out stand-up tours across the country, Kev has established himself as the ultimate blueprint for the modern media mogul.<\/p>\n<p>Kev recently spoke with <em>The Root<\/em> about what excites him about \u201cSafe Space\u201d\u2014whose second season premiered in June\u2014the importance of his independence as a creator, and why comedians have to do more than ever to remain relevant in today\u2019s comedic landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we just try to take the same excitement and execution into every project that we do,\u201d Kev explained. <\/p>\n<p><em>RELATED: <\/em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theroot.com\/bet-awards-2026-best-and-worst-dressed-2000113400\/slides\/2\">BET Awards 2026: Best and Worst Dressed<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When he\u2019s not podcasting or doing stand-up, Kev is creating new shows that push the boundaries of comedy. \u201cSafe Space,\u201d<em> <\/em>his couples therapy comedy series, centers on the well-meaning but hilariously under qualified \u201cDr. Fredericks\u201d as he attempts to counsel dysfunctional couples through their relationship drama. Kev opened up about how maintaining a high standard of excellence and focusing on flawless execution has significantly expanded his footprint in the comedy game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe attack it the same way every single time, and we want to meet our level or beat our level. With everything I do, I\u2019m trying to raise the bar, so we tried to do some things that we weren\u2019t able to do in season one,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bWhile Kev is the anchor of the show, the true engine of \u201cSafe Space\u201d is its rotating ensemble cast featuring some of the top comedians and content creators. I\u2019ve always enjoyed collaboration, and I\u2019m a competitive person, but I use it positively,\u201d said Kev. \u201cI want to bring people who bring the best out of me, and I\u2019m inspired by funny people, and I want to make sure that the audience is having the best time they can have. So that\u2019s why I try to get the best people that I can get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he\u2019s \u201cnever intimidated by anybody\u2019s talent. If they\u2019re killing the scene and they\u2019re funnier than me, then that means the audience is having a good time. I know if I\u2019m laughing on set and the crew\u2019s laughing on set, then the audience is going to laugh when it\u2019s their time to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of going the traditional route with his content, Kev <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/06\/kevonstage-signs-new-tubi-deal-1236940086\/\">inked<\/a> a lucrative multi-year partnership with Tubi. The partnership includes multiple upcoming seasons of \u201cSafe Space,\u201d a new workplace comedy titled \u201cThe Airport,\u201d two original feature films, and his first streaming stand-up special, \u201cGrief Sucks.\u201d The partnership is Tubi\u2019s most expensive to date, and Kev detailed why the platform is perfect for his brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was connected to Tubi by Rich Bloom, who worked previously at Vimeo. They were aware of my app, Cam State Studios,\u201d he said. \u201cVimeo used to host that app, and they noticed my ability to drive my audience to my app, and they thought I could do the same thing at Tubi. It\u2018s the best situation I could have asked for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody understands the grind of the modern comedy ecosystem quite like KevOnStage. His trajectory highlights a new reality for today\u2019s comics. If you aren\u2019t ready to do it all, from editing your own vertical videos to managing a Patreon, you\u2019re going to get left behind. For him, being a multi-hyphenate is essential to being a successful comedian in the digital world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s comedy landscape, you have to do more. I think prior generations of comics could have a great set on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d which would get you on the road, a TV show, movies, and that was the path,\u201d Kev shared. \u201cToday\u2019s comedians can\u2019t do the same thing. You have to be funny on stage, you have to have a podcast, you need to be active on social media, and you need to be selling your own merch. You have to find a way to do more things to get the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kev also pointed out that the days of getting rich off standard TV show checks are long gone. With a shift in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/magazine\/article\/streaming-residuals-explained-77222\/\">industry\u2019s pay structure<\/a>, creators have the opportunity to build their own tables instead of accepting a seat at someone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, you may have to make less in exchange for being more creative, so I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s all bad,\u201d said Kev. \u201cThe gatekeepers are having a harder time gatekeeping because people have direct access to their audience now. You can build your own audience outside of traditional media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what he would consider a successful season of \u201cSafe Space,\u201d<em> <\/em>Kev revealed the vision behind his creativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as I\u2019m able to make people laugh and introduce new talent to people, that\u2019s success to me. You can\u2019t control the numbers,\u201d Kev said. \u201cAll I can control is how much work I put into it, which is a lot every time, and I hope that people enjoy it.
