The Duke of Kent was joined by Lady Susan Hussey as he led the
\nRoyal Family\u2019s attendance on the opening day of Wimbledon 2026.<\/p>\n
The 90-year-old royal, a former patron of the All England Lawn
\nTennis and Croquet Club, took his place in the Royal Box on Centre
\nCourt as play got underway at SW19.<\/p>\n
Lady Susan Hussey accompanied the Duke for Wimbledon\u2019s opening
\nday\u2019s action. She served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II
\nfor more than six decades, acting as Woman of the Bedchamber from
\n1960 until the late Queen\u2019s death in 2022, and was widely regarded
\nas one of the monarch\u2019s closest confidantes.<\/p>\n
Following the Accession, King Charles III appointed Lady Susan
\nas one of his Ladies of the Household. However, she resigned from
\nthe role in November 2022 after a reception at Buckingham Palace
\nwhere charity founder Ngozi Fulani said Lady Susan repeatedly
\nquestioned her about her heritage. Buckingham Palace described the
\ncomments as \u201cunacceptable and deeply regrettable\u201d, while Lady Susan
\nissued an apology for \u201cthe hurt caused\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lady Susan, born Susan Katherine Waldegrave on 1 May 1939, is
\nthe daughter of Geoffrey Waldegrave, 12th Earl Waldegrave. She
\nmarried Marmaduke Hussey in 1959, with the couple having two
\nchildren, James and Katherine. Lord Hussey later served as Chairman
\nof the BBC.<\/p>\n
Her close relationship with the Royal Family extended beyond her
\nofficial duties. She became one of Prince William\u2019s godparents
\nfollowing his birth in 1982, and in 2021 Queen Elizabeth II chose
\nLady Susan to accompany her on the journey to the funeral of the
\nDuke of Edinburgh during the COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n
The Duke of Kent, who has scaled back his public engagements in
\nrecent years, has nevertheless remained a familiar face at major
\nroyal occasions, including Trooping the Colour and Garter Day
\nearlier this month.<\/p>\n
Among the other high-profile guests in the Royal Box on Monday
\nwere David Beckham, Dame Mary Berry, Tess Daly and Katherine
\nJenkins.<\/p>\n
The Princess of Wales, patron of the All England Club since
\n2016, is expected to attend the Wimbledon Championships later in
\nthe fortnight and traditionally presents the singles trophies on
\nfinals weekend.<\/p>\n
