DC’s Supergirl<\/em> underperformed at the global box office despite heavy buzz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Director Craig Gillespie helmed the superhero project on a reported budget of around $170 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Milly Alcock took over the titular role, with Matthias Schoenaerts and Jason Momoa also appearing in the blockbuster film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Supergirl<\/em> might be a blockbuster superhero film, but its box office numbers are anything but epic.<\/p>\n Now, after the highly anticipated film flopped across its opening weekend with an estimated $68 million in global ticket sales on a reported budget of around $170 million, a DC Studios boss has weighed in on the disappointing numbers.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile Supergirl<\/em> didn\u2019t meet our box office expectations, it\u2019s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Peter Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios, told the New York Times<\/em><\/a> after the film’s opening weekend.<\/p>\n Initial expectations had the film projected to earn under $55 million from Friday through Sunday, though a weak $18.2 million start heading into the weekend lowered predictions as the weekend carried on.<\/p>\n Critics also weren’t thrilled with the Craig Gillespie-directed film, which currently stands at a rating of 49\/100 on Metacritic, though the Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 76 percent based on over 2,500 verified user ratings on the site.<\/p>\n The film represents a new era for DC, with actress Milly Alcock<\/a> leading the film as the titular character, Matthias Schoenaerts<\/a> playing Krem, David Corenswet<\/a> reprising his role as Superman, and Jason Momoa<\/a> as Lobo.<\/p>\n Supergirl<\/em> has a long way to go before its box office total catches up to that of Corenswet’s Superman<\/em>, the 2025 James Gunn-directed hit that posted just under $620 million worldwide on a $225 million budget.<\/p>\n Following Superman<\/em>, Supergirl<\/em> is the second film in the rebooted DC Universe, with the third set to be October’s more moderately budgeted body horror film, Clayface. <\/em><\/p>\n
