Laura Veirs<\/a> has released a new single called \u201cPulse,\u201d offering another preview of her upcoming album Temple Songs<\/em>. The song builds from a simple acoustic foundation into a fuller, more experimental sound that reflects the album\u2019s handmade approach. Veirs is also preparing to support the release with a headlining tour across the UK and North America.<\/p>\n

In a press release, Laura Veirs\u2019 team announced that the upcoming album Temple Songs<\/em> is due out August 14th, 2026<\/strong>, via her own\u00a0Raven Marching Band Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Her 14th\u00a0solo LP showcases Veirs\u2019 gift for simplicity and emotional precision, while also veering into art-experimental territory, as on the compelling and cacophonous \u201cPulse.\u201d The track slowly builds from Veirs\u2019 expressive nylon-string guitar and vulnerable vocals to a brimming, lush soundscape featuring bold electric guitar embellishments and \u201cFilthy\u201d Lucre\u2019s saxophone\u2013the only outside contribution on\u00a0Temple Songs<\/em>\u00a0(Veirs herself wrote, recorded, arranged, produced, and performed the rest entirely on her own). Of the song and its charming Twixx Williams-directed video, Veirs explains:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis song is about feeling the pulse of being alive\u2014trusting that something good is still moving toward us, even in the middle of chaos and suffering. It\u2019s the most sonically dense track on the album, and building it piece by piece in the studio was fun. I played my niece\u2019s bass and my stepkids\u2019 drums, which gave it this layered, familial energy. My favorite moment is the dissonant duet between my electric guitar and the sax, played by special guest \u2018Filthy\u2019 Lucre\u2014I love the feelings of tension and release. We carried that energy into the video, which features my blended family in a home gym setting. The video takes some bizarre turns with cake and silly string, which fits the chaos and playfulness of the music. I liked the idea of making an exercise video\u2014partly as a nod to the elevated pulse of the title, and partly because I\u2019ve gotten into weightlifting in recent years. I can now deadlift 110 pounds, which still surprises me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cPulse\u201d follows the textured, stirring lead single\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Flying Into Darkness<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0which earned praise and support from\u00a0Stereogum<\/strong>,\u00a0The Needle Drop<\/strong>,\u00a0Brooklyn Vegan<\/strong>,\u00a0Under The Radar<\/strong>,\u00a0WNYC New Sounds<\/strong>,\u00a0Folk Alley<\/strong><\/em>, and more. The esteemed Portland, OR-based artist will celebrate\u00a0Temple Songs<\/em>\u00a0with a headlining fall tour, beginning in September in the UK before landing in the US in October, with Karl Blau opening all shows. Since the 2022 release of her last studio album\u00a0Found Light<\/em>, Veirs has kept her days full: building a backyard studio, getting married, blending a family with four teenagers, deepening her visual art practice, and expanding her music teaching.\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t know if I would write songs again,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she says.\u00a0\u201cTurns out that period was a gathering phase. When I made the commitment to recording the album myself, the muse caught me again and it came together very quickly.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Written and recorded over three months in the fall of 2025 in Veirs\u2019 backyard \u2018Temple of Bloom\u2019 studio, her 14th\u00a0solo LP marks a new level of artistic independence. While\u00a0Found Light<\/em>\u00a0(co-produced by Veirs and Shahzad Ismaily) was a declaration of autonomy,\u00a0Temple Songs<\/em>\u00a0goes even further: every creative decision was Veirs\u2019 alone.<\/p>\n

Made with just two mics and a laptop in a 10\u2032 x 14\u2032 room, Veirs embraced the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi throughout the process, choosing not to pitch-correct vocals or edit out rough edges.\u00a0\u201cI wanted to make something that sounds as organic and human as possible,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she says. Mixing by Philip Weinrobe (Adrienne Lenker) adds sympathetic finishing touches. Because the Temple of Bloom wasn\u2019t built for recording, the studio itself became a collaborator. Veirs paused takes for rain on the skylight\u2013or let it stay. She waited out neighbors\u2019 conversations, raced to finish a sensitive vocal before a stump grinder roared to life, and included the presence of resident bluejays, passing crows, and other neighborhood sounds<\/a>. These ambient intrusions lend the album an intimate, lived-in authenticity.\u00a0<\/em>She used no click tracks and no electronic instruments, working by feel and intuition while watching bamboo sway outside her studio window. At 52, Veirs has reconnected with herself through a radically new process: one that feels both fresh and profoundly earned.<\/p>\n
