Melissa Gilbert<\/strong><\/a> is paying tribute to former costar Daveigh Chase<\/strong> after her death.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the @daveighchase.official I knew,\u201d Gilbert, 62, wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Monday, June 29, sharing a photo of Chase as a child. \u201cI shot a pilot for a series with her 20+ years ago. Two wonderful humans @thejackcoleman and @kevinzegers1984 played my husband and son, respectively. I only worked with Daveigh a couple of days but I could see she was bright both in countenance and in mind. She was bubbly, sweet and professional.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cBut there was something else there, a push or need to perform \u2026for her parents. I have been around a lot of child actors, myself included, which makes us all a part of a big multigenerational tribe. As a consequence, I\u2019ve also been around a lot of stage parents. Many child actors grow up just fine, whether they stay in \u2018the business\u2019 or not. That is 100 percent due to really solid, wise parenting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gilbert reflected that \u201cchild stardom\u201d is \u201cnot a guarantee of dysfunction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tOn June 17, Cathy Chase learned that her daughter Daveigh Chase had died the previous day at age 35. \u201cI let out this guttural scream,\u201d Cathy told The Daily Mail in an interview, \u201cand I went out into the backyard, and I was screaming, \u2018No, no, no, no!\u2019\u201d At the time, Chase\u2019s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHowever, when a parent or parents lose sight of who THEY are, of what their true responsibility is, and their lives revolve solely around their little star child, well, that\u2019s where the trouble begins. It takes strong parenting to handle all that comes with it,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThe terrible part is, that so few child actors continue on to have careers as actors. For most, it goes away, and when that happens it not only devastates the child but it turns the whole family upside down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gilbert shared that she was \u201ctruly heartbroken\u201d after learning the cause of Daveigh\u2019s death<\/a>. (Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively confirmed on Monday via the Los Angeles medical examiner that Daveigh died of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome with other significant conditions including chronic polysubstance use.)<\/p>\n
