In theaters.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One\u00a0of\u00a0the best odes to Old Hollywood in a long time comes courtesy of \u2026 the Minions?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, somehow the funny yellow Tic\u00a0Tacs, who heretofore clumsily served supervillains, are leading a smart and detailed tribute to Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s, Orson Welles, Boris Karloff, \u201cCasablanca\u201d and countless other pieces of movie-making history called \u201cMinions &amp; Monsters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Improbably this fantastic animated kids movie,\u00a0sure to be a highlight of the summer, is an adult cinephile\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t make a lick of sense. It also makes a ton of sense.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Minions go Hollywood in \u201cMinions &amp; Monsters.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Because years ago, French director Pierre Coffin, who co-created the talking Tylenols in 2010\u2019s \u201cDespicable Me,\u201d realized that the real scene stealer wasn\u2019t Steve Carell\u2019s baddie Gru at all, but rather his pellet-shaped henchmen who speak in European gibberish.<\/p>\n<p>I unabashedly love the Minions. They are never less than hilarious, and they are\u00a0much\u00a0more colorful and creative than most of what Pixar and DreamWorks are churning out. You could put them in pretty much anything, like Stanley Tucci. Come to think of it, they bear a striking resemblance to Stanley Tucci.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>And that\u2019s what Coffin has done with \u201cMonsters,\u201d which is their finest hour\u2026 and\u00a030\u00a0minutes. He\u2019s plopped \u2018em far away from \u201cDespicable Me\u201d in the 1920s Golden Age of Hollywood, with its\u00a0bustling\u00a0sound stages, eccentric personalities and the\u00a0monolithic\u00a0studio system.<\/p>\n<p>How do the yukking yolks get to Tinseltown\u00a0of all places? While traversing the world in search of a new \u201cbig boss\u201d \u2014 and cycling through a cyclops, a sorcerer and a mummy \u2014 the Minions (also voiced by Coffin)\u00a0flock to who they think is a Wild West gunslinger and\u00a0finally\u00a0land in sunny Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>While searching for a new villainous boss, the title scamps wind up in Los Angeles. <span class=\"credit\">Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Actually,\u00a0what the\u00a0mischief makers\u00a0did is\u00a0botch\u00a0a train robbery film shoot.\u00a0In the process,\u00a0they\u00a0are discovered\u00a0a la Marilyn Monroe\u00a0by a director named Max\u00a0(Christoph Waltz), who wears a monocle like Erich von Stroheim. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Right away, they\u2019re the toast of the town.\u00a0\u201cThe biggest stars the world has ever seen,\u201d proclaims Max.\u00a0They appear in\u00a0such\u00a0hit films as \u201cThe Good, the Bad and the Stupids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, like\u00a0tiny\u00a0Norma Desmonds, their\u00a0careers are destroyed with the advent of\u00a0cinematic\u00a0sound \u2014 a k a \u201cthe talkies\u201d \u2014 and\u00a0they are unceremoniously given the boot. Can you believe this plot? Incredible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Henry and James, this flick\u2019s main Minions, dream of winning an Oscar. <span class=\"credit\">Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The main Minions this time are Henry and James, creative\u00a0rebels\u00a0who are more concerned with art than villainry. James sketches storyboards in a notebook and longs to be an Oscar-winning director. To save his friends, James concocts \u201cMinions y Monstras,\u201d a Hollywood horror blockbuster. However,\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0need to recruit\u00a0frightening creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the movie is in Minionese. With just a\u00a0sprinkle\u00a0of English, it\u2019s practically a foreign film like \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d Only enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody can compete with the crowd-pleasing scamps, of course, however there are some amusing non-Minions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Trey Parker voices Goomi (right). <span class=\"credit\">Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSouth Park\u201d\u2019s Trey Parker voices Goomi, a tiny tentacled creature who helps the guys hunt down terrifying beasts.\u00a0When he approaches\u00a0two fearsome titans, Goomi gets one of the film\u2019s funniest lines:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are no longer evil,\u201d he announces. \u201cWe work in the motion picture industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s Dort (Jesse Eisenberg), a lanky robot \u2014 a geek in a suit perhaps? \u2014 who a splinter faction of Minions makes their new leader.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Minions are more creative and interesting that most of what Pixar and DreamWorks are churning out. <span class=\"credit\">Universal\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the first half of the film is a deluge of insider cinema jokes, the emotional story of James and Henry as against-the-grain innovators grounds the\u00a0delightful, Criterion Collection\u00a0chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Once Goomi and Dort arrive, \u201cMonsters\u201d swerves into a more familiar, save-the-world race to the finish. Even so, the Minions always make the\u00a0would-be banal into something perfectly weird and wonderful.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know, I talk about these CGI cocktail weenies like they\u2019re Meryl Streep. But there\u2019s something to that.\u00a0Critics often remark of\u00a0summery blockbuster comedies, like \u201cMamma Mia!,\u201d that the cast looks like they\u2019re having so much fun.\u00a0And so, we do as well.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s weird is the same is true of the\u00a0Minions.
