The director of a controversial new movie touted as<\/a> a comeback vehicle for disgraced actor Armie Hammer<\/a> is speaking out after getting a surprise boost from Elon Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cCitizen Vigilante,\u201d starring Hammer in his first major role after being hit<\/a> with allegations of sexual misconduct and assault<\/a> five years ago, will be distributed worldwide by Quiver Distribution, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Tuesday<\/a>. The news comes just days after Musk promoted the film<\/a>, which reportedly embraces anti-immigrant themes and contains scenes of extreme violence, with a free download for viewers on X. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking to Variety<\/a> late Tuesday, German filmmaker Uwe Boll said he initially thought he\u2019d received a message from \u201ca parody account\u201d when Musk contacted the team behind his U.S. podcast, \u201cUwe Boll Raw,\u201d with his plan to share the movie online. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was very quick, you know,\u201d Boll told the outlet. \u201cI think this guy, I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing per day, but I think his attention went like fast, you know. So, I felt also if we don\u2019t in a way agree to do it, he would\u2019ve just moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cCitizen Vigilante\u201d follows Michael Sanders (played by Hammer), an American businessman who wages a gun-toting crusade against officials and immigrant perpetrators of violence in Croatia. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The movie was released to little fanfare in the U.S. last month, drawing negative reviews. Variety critic Todd Gilchrist called it<\/a> \u201ca violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation,\u201d while blasting Hammer\u2019s character for being rendered \u201cas xenophobic and entitled as the broadest American stereotype.\u201d Meanwhile, Salon\u2019s Coleman Spilde was even more blunt, deeming the film<\/a> \u201ca bigoted pile of garbage.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cCitizen Vigilante\u201d seemingly caught Musk\u2019s eye after Boll confirmed it had been blocked<\/a> from traditional modes of promotion in Germany, reportedly out of concern<\/a> that its depictions of anti-immigrant violence could inspire copycat attacks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The tech entrepreneur and longtime ally of President Donald Trump<\/a> shared a link to stream the movie in its entirety on X last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is what people want to see,\u201d he wrote<\/a> in a separate post, alongside a report that the movie had hit No. 1 on Amazon<\/a> Prime Video. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In his chat with Variety<\/a>, Boll argued many critics might have been more opposed to the views \u201cCitizen Vigilante\u201d presents than the film itself, noting, \u201cThey cannot stand to face the political reality.\u201d He\u2019s also hinted at<\/a> plans for a sequel, and is hopeful Hammer will sign on. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen you make a successful movie, you always hope that you can make a second part, and it would make sense to send [Sanders] to England or to send him to America, and then we go from there,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Though Hammer has long denied<\/a> the allegations leveled against him<\/a>, he did take some responsibility<\/a> for his downfall in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI made these problems for myself,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cThis didn\u2019t happen to me by a fluke accident. I didn\u2019t do what people are saying I did. But I brought very dangerous and unsafe people into my life, and I pissed off people in my life \u2014 and here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Though he was mostly tight-lipped on the content of \u201cCitizen Vigilante,\u201d he admitted he \u201ccried\u201d when he received the offer to appear in the film, noting: \u201cI would have done a fucking cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
