TIDAL is introducing a new policy requiring AI transparency labels for music and excluding fully AI-created tracks from royalty payments.<\/p>\n
The streaming platform published its updated AI policy<\/a> yesterday (29th June), which it described as \u201ca living document\u201d that it will keep updating \u201cas the advancements in technology warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n Under the new policy, only \u201coriginal works directly produced, written, and performed by people\u201d will be eligible for royalties.\u00a0The company said it may revisit how it handles monetisation of AI-assisted works developed using properly licensed models as industry standards evolve.<\/p>\n TIDAL clarified that it will not outright ban AI-generated music, which it defines as \u201cmusic that is wholly or substantially generated by generative artificial intelligence.\u201d\u00a0The platform believes \u201cartists should have the freedom to create with AI tools, and listeners should have the autonomy to choose the type of content they consume,\u201d while maintaining it \u201cwill hold AI-generated content to a higher standard of content integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n The policy also introduces new AI transparency measures. Beginning in mid-July,\u00a0listeners will see an icon on any music TIDAL identifies as 100 percent AI-generated, with\u00a0the company planning to expand the labelling system\u00a0to music that is substantially AI-generated in the future. It said it will also require creators and distributors to disclose AI involvement in production.\u00a0These tags are in line with transparency policies used by other streaming platforms, including\u00a0Traxsource<\/a> and Apple Music<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cTidal is not here to bash technological advancement, with today\u2019s launch of our AI policy,\u201d TIDAL executive vice president Tony Gervino wrote in the\u00a0announcement post<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0new policy.\u00a0However, he said the company is \u201ccommitted to protecting and rewarding organic creativity to avoid compromising an artist\u2019s ability to connect with and build their fandom from TIDAL subscribers,\u201d adding that \u201cmany have told us they do not want to be exposed to \u2014 or prompted to listen to \u2014 wholly AI-generated music.\u201d<\/p>\n TIDAL said the policy will extend to its self-service distribution tool for independent artists, TIDAL Upload.<\/p>\n Read the full updated AI policy here<\/a>.<\/p>\n In January, Bandcamp announced<\/a> that music \u201cgenerated wholly or in substantial part by AI\u201d would no longer be allowed on its platform.<\/p>\n Meanwhile,\u00a0Deezer<\/a>,\u00a0which found AI-generated music accounts for 44% of daily uploads to its platform,\u00a0has introduced a policy to demonetise fully AI-generated tracks<\/a>.<\/p>\n
