Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live in Buckingham Palace, moving in when she came to the throne nearly 200 years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0mtw3m0005356rluynt4n8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite spending considerable time at their various country retreats, from Windsor Castle outside London, to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2024\/04\/05\/travel\/balmoral-castle-tours-royal-newsletter-intl-gbr-scli\">Balmoral<\/a> in Scotland, every subsequent monarch has kept Buckingham Palace as their primary residence. Until now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkn0001356rkdtstmsi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was revealed last week that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2026\/06\/25\/uk\/britain-king-charles-tax-bill-hnk-intl\">King Charles III is breaking with this tradition<\/a> as he and his wife, Queen Camilla, will not be moving into the palace when a 10-year renovation program costing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-38025513\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a3369 million<\/a> ($488 million) wraps up next year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkn0002356rcgms0e1l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, Charles will remain at nearby Clarence House, where he has lived since 2003, with Buckingham Palace continuing to serve as the administrative headquarters of the monarchy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkn0003356rlv1ern8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c(Buckingham Palace) will be a buzzing hive of royal activity in every other way,\u201d a palace spokesperson told celebrity.land.\n    <\/p>\n<div \u201cHis Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfko0005356ry89w6d0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not yet clear whether Charles\u2019 decision to remain at Clarence House will lessen the interest of the visitors who throng daily outside the gold-topped palace railings, hoping to catch a glimpse of royal life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkp0006356rx08kzidm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One visitor told Reuters news agency they were interested in seeing the building for itself, adding: \u201cWhether or not the King lives there or not is not consequential to us.\u201d Another visitor took a different view, saying a palace without royals inside \u201closes its magic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkp0007356r2tywx4xj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            James Chalmers, the King\u2019s treasurer and Keeper of the Privy Purse, told UK media it would remain the primary venue for ceremonial and official functions including receiving foreign dignitaries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq0008356rqxsjf7zz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is and will remain monarchy HQ, the crown jewel of our national buildings, with the sovereign\u2019s standard flying proudly from the roof whenever his majesty is in London,\u201d he told reporters. Charles will maintain private rooms there that could be used as accommodation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000a356rhj1k1vx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Buckingham House was bought by George III in 1761 for Queen Charlotte and their children to live in. When George IV came to the throne, he commissioned the architect John Nash to enlarge the house into a palace, but George died before the work was completed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000b356rcy6s5p3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though the palace had cost \u00a3496,169 (around \u00a333.6 million, or $44.4 million, today), William IV opted to remain at Clarence House, even offering Buckingham Palace as a replacement to the Houses of Parliament after they burnt down in 1834. Parliament declined the offer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000c356rdu36adju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1845, Queen Victoria oversaw the last expansion to the palace, adding the East Wing, which faces down the Mall. The building now has 775 rooms, including 78 bathrooms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000d356rn4y9vznp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest conservation work began on the palace in April 2017. The work is \u201cfar more than cosmetic,\u201d Natasha Brown, an expert in historical building conversions and director of Giles Quarme Architects, who isn\u2019t involved in the project, said in an email to celebrity.land.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000e356r74x3yoyv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The restoration work was desperately needed. Princess Anne, Charles\u2019 sister, was nearly hit by a piece of falling masonry in 2007, according to British media reports, and staff often had to use buckets to catch leaks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000f356rcnjkdpf8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt includes the wholesale replacement of ageing electrical, plumbing, and mechanical services, extensive fire protection works, and the careful removal of asbestos,\u201d Brown said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkq000g356r20u5qeo4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asbestos was discovered in the basement during the restoration, costing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nao.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/progress-on-the-buckingham-palace-reservicing-programme.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a310.1 million<\/a> ($13.4 million) to remove.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000i356ruudxg83g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Charles is the first monarch in 189 years not to use the palace as his official home, he is far from the first to eschew the building.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0mytey0007356riucdhf15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although Queen Victoria had made it the royal family home and center of official business for two decades, she withdrew from public life following the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861 and spent most of her time at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/visit\/windsor-castle\/who-lived-at-windsor-castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windsor Castle<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000j356rjt9ehs75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Victoria was so rarely at Buckingham Palace that, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/gift\/40073238e68e6260\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph<\/a>, a note was left on the fence of the residence in 1864, reading, \u201cThese commanding premises to be let or sold, in consequence of the late occupant\u2019s declining business.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000k356re41p4omc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the Covid-19 pandemic, Queen Elizabeth II moved to Windsor, citing the building work, but \u201cthe late Queen never much liked living at Buckingham Palace,\u201d Robert Hardman, a royal expert who has written biographies of King Charles and Queen Elizabeth, told celebrity.land in an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000l356rsvnv3nkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cShe was very sad moving in there as a little girl in 1936 (when her father, George VI, became king), and she was even more sad moving in there when her father died,\u201d Hardman said.\n the time, that the monarch had to \u201cmove in above the shop,\u201d Hardman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000n356rxeapyzag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The problem, Hardman said, is that the palace was \u201cnever really designed as a home.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000o356rxi08reed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you walk through the door of Clarence House, you feel like you\u2019re going into a home. It\u2019s a grand home, but it\u2019s a home. If you walk into the door of Buckingham Palace, you feel you\u2019re entering a head of state\u2019s office,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000p356rg97jma9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            George V preferred his country estate of Sandringham in Norfolk, and reportedly described it as, \u201cDear old Sandringham, the place I love better than anywhere else in the world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000q356ruzejixwx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even though members of the public are generally only <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rct.uk\/visit\/buckingham-palace\" target=\"_blank\">allowed tours<\/a> of Buckingham Palace during the summer, when the monarch is traditionally in Scotland, inside the palace, \u201cyou\u2019re very much the focus of attention,\u201d Hardman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfkr000r356rlomcjipj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the palace has been the monarch\u2019s official residence since Queen Victoria\u2019s reign, it has undergone extensive remodelling since then.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmr0lsfks000s356rt6hv1h1p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The east wing was added in 1847, closing off the open courtyard designed by Nash.
