For his first solo release in over a decade, <\/span>Brandon Flowers<\/span> has gone country on his latest single \u2018<\/span>Plans<\/span>\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

As the lead single from his upcoming third studio album, \u2018<\/span>THRASHER<\/span>\u2019, the track marks a significant pivot away from the 80s synth-pop of \u2018<\/span>The Desired Effect<\/span>\u2019, leaning into a particularly full-bodied, authentic country sound instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flowers explains: “<\/span>As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found my way back to my father’s music – ‘Country-Western’ (as he called it), and discovered that the stories I carry really feel most at home in the skin of this beautiful American tradition<\/span>“.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recorded in Nashville\u2019s <\/span>Historic<\/span> <\/span>RCA Studio A<\/span> with producers <\/span>Shawn Everett<\/span> and <\/span>Jonathan Rado<\/span>, \u2018<\/span>Plans<\/span>\u2019 sits much closer to the slow-burning storytelling style of <\/span>The Killers<\/span>\u2019 \u2018<\/span>Pressure Machine<\/span>\u2019 than previous solo releases, \u2018<\/span>Flamingo<\/span>\u2019 and \u2018<\/span>The Desired Effect<\/span>\u2019. While neither album shied away completely from country influence \u2013 \u2018<\/span>The Clock Was Tickin\u2019<\/span>\u2019 from \u2018<\/span>Flamingo<\/span>\u2019 and \u2018<\/span>Diggin\u2019 Up The Heart<\/span>\u2019 from \u2018<\/span>The Desired Effect<\/span>\u2019 being honourable mentions here \u2013 \u2018<\/span>Plans<\/span>\u2019 takes that influence and pushes it further than Flowers ever has before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With acoustic guitar, strings and rich backing vocals, it\u2019s safe to say that the single<\/span> sits very comfortably in old-school country-western territory. Flowers’ voice suits it more than many might expect, too. Yes, his vocals have always had that beautiful Americana twang, but in \u2018<\/span>Plans<\/span>\u2019, it\u2019s crystal clear \u2013 his deep, weathered vocals in the first half of the track are so low they\u2019re suitably reminiscent of the rumblings of a truck driving through the desert. It gives the lyrics, including \u201c<\/span>I think I\u2019m going under<\/span>\u201d, a much more significant weight, which might have been lost amongst a more polished sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some fans will likely miss the synths \u2013 and understandably so. But, as a pivot into something more country, traditional and stripped back, it really works. While it might not be the Brandon Flowers the old-school Killers fans were hoping for, \u2018<\/span>Plans<\/span>\u2019 makes complete sense as Flowers\u2019 next move, and this is definitely something to be excited about.<\/span><\/p>\n

‘<\/span>THRASHER<\/span>\u2019 is set to be released August 21st via Island Records, with a UK\/IE tour set for October. Pre-sale tickets<\/a> for the tour go on sale at 10:00 BST on Wednesday 1st July, while general sale starts 10:00 BST on Friday 3rd July.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
