King Charles and Prince William took centre stage in Edinburgh
\nat the annual Order of the Thistle service at St Giles\u2019 Cathedral
\nduring Royal Week.<\/p>\n
The centuries-old ceremony saw the King also joined by Queen
\nCamilla and the Duke of Edinburgh, with the senior royals
\nprocessing through parts of the Scottish capital in one of the
\nmonarchy\u2019s most striking displays of pageantry.<\/p>\n
Prince William, who became a Royal Knight of the Order in 2012,
\ntook his place alongside fellow members wearing the distinctive
\ndeep green velvet mantle and dramatic black velvet hat topped with
\nsweeping white ostrich feathers.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s ceremony brought together several royal members of the
\nOrder. King Charles serves as Sovereign of the Order, while Queen
\nCamilla was installed in 2024 alongside the Duke of Edinburgh.
\nPrince William has represented the next generation of the monarchy
\nwithin the ancient order since his appointment by Queen Elizabeth

In 2022, Prince William became Duke of Rothesay, the title that
\nautomatically goes to the heir to the Scottish throne. In England,
\nthe heir was always the Duke of Cornwall, another title that
\nWilliam instantly acquired when he became first in line. On
\nSeptember 9 2022, just 24 hours into his reign, King Charles also
\ncreated his elder son the Prince of Wales, the title traditionally
\ngiven to the heir to the throne.<\/p>\n
The rich green mantle is one of the defining features of the
\nOrder. Lined with silk and fastened with green and gold cords, it
\nbears the silver star of the Order embroidered on the left
\nshoulder. Members also wear an elaborate gold collar decorated with
\nthistles from which hangs the badge of St Andrew, Scotland\u2019s patron
\nsaint. The ceremonial dress is reserved for the Order\u2019s most
\nsignificant occasions.<\/p>\n
The Order of the Thistle is Scotland\u2019s highest order of chivalry
\nand second only to the Order of the Garter in the UK\u2019s honours
\nsystem. Although its origins are wrapped in legend, the modern
\nOrder was formally revived by King James VII of Scotland in 1687.
\nMembership is limited to the Sovereign, 16 Knights and Ladies,
\ntogether with a small number of Royal Knights and Ladies. Unlike
\nmost honours, appointments are made personally by the monarch in
\nrecognition of exceptional service to Scotland and are not made on
\nministerial advice.<\/p>\n
The annual service has been held at St Giles\u2019 Cathedral since
\nthe Thistle Chapel was completed in 1911 and remains one of the
\nhighlights of Holyrood Week. Members process from the nearby Signet
\nLibrary before gathering in the cathedral for a service celebrating
\nScotland\u2019s most prestigious order of chivalry.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s ceremony brought together many of the Order\u2019s royal
\nmembers. King Charles serves as Sovereign of the Order, while Queen
\nCamilla was installed in 2024 alongside the Duke of Edinburgh. The
\nPrincess Royal has been a member since 2000 and Prince William has
\nrepresented the next generation of the monarchy within the ancient
\norder since his appointment by Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n
The appearance marks another busy week for the Royal Family in
\nScotland. Just days ago, the Princess of Wales completed the
\nNational Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer
\nCharity. Catherine began the challenge by climbing Ben Nevis before
\ncontinuing to Scafell Pike and finishing on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon),
\nraising funds for the specialist cancer hospital where she received
\ntreatment. Although she was not among those attending today\u2019s
\nThistle service, her latest challenge has kept Scotland firmly on
\nthe royal agenda.<\/p>\n
Royal Week, known officially as Holyrood Week, remains one of
\nthe most important fixtures in the royal calendar, celebrating
\nScottish communities, culture and public service.<\/p>\n
