The youngest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince
\nPhilip has just graduated from St. Andrew\u2019s University in Scotland
\nand given a very clear answer to an ongoing royal question.<\/p>\n
Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor took part in the traditional
\ngraduation ceremony following the completion of her honours
\ndegree.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s been studying English at the university which is also
\nfamous for being the alma mater of the Prince and Princess of
\nWales.<\/p>\n
As she prepared to collect her degree, Louise was introduced by
\nher full name, clearing up the confusion about how she is
\nknown.<\/p>\n
For years, there\u2019s been debate about whether she\u2019s Louise
\nWindsor or Louise Mountbatten-Windsor.<\/p>\n
In this very public and formal ceremony, she was called forward
\nas Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, underlining the fact that she is
\nknown by the name that Elizabeth II decreed all her descendants
\nwith non royal titles could use.<\/p>\n
In 1960, the late Queen said that all her children and
\ngrandchildren who weren\u2019t HRH could be known as
\nMountbatten-Windsor, melding her own dynastic name with the surname
\nof her husband who was part of the Mountbatten family.<\/p>\n
When Louise was bornin, 2003, her parents, the Duke and Duchess
\nof Edinburgh, said she would be known as Lady Louise
\nMountbatten-Windsor but since then, she has often been called just
\nLouise Windsor.<\/p>\n
Now, the 22 year old has made it clear how she prefers to be
\nknowon.<\/p>\n
However, there was no title for Louise at the graduation
\nceremony. She was called Louise, rather than Lady Louise. When her
\ncousin, the Prince of Wales, graduated in 2005, he also dropped his
\ntitle. The now heir to the throne was called forward to receive his
\ndegree as William Wales.<\/p>\n
The graduation marks the end of a happy and successful time at
\nuniversity for Lady Louise who has taken on holiday jobs during her
\nbreaks from studying.<\/p>\n
As she prepares to start a new chapter in her life, speculation
\nwill once again rise over whether or not Louise will become a full
\ntime working member of the Royal Family.<\/p>\n
Both her parents have busy diaries of official engagements and
\nLouise has been praised in the past for her confidence and warmth.
\nShe, however, has made it clear that she enjoys life away from the
\nroyal spotlight and worked contentedly at a garden centre and at
\nthe latest Royal Windsor Horse Show.<\/p>\n
She\u2019ll be leaving university just as her younger brother packs
\nhis bags to head to college.<\/p>\n
James, the Earl of Wessex, is completing his A Levels and is
\nexpected to head off to take a degree in the autumn.<\/p>\n
Both James and Louise are entitled to use royal titles but they
\nand their parents have always chosen for them not to.<\/p>\n
Under the 1917 Letters Patent, issued by King George V, they
\ncould be HRH and Prince\/ Princess as both are grandchildren of a
\nMonarch in the male line. In 1999, when Edward and Sophie married,
\nBuckingham Palace issued a press release saying that any future
\nchildren would use the titles of the offspring of an earl \u2013 at the
\ntime, their parents were the Earl and Countess of Wessex. However,
\nSophie revealed in an interview years later, that the option of HRH
\nremained and it was up to her children to decide whether to take it
\nup or not.<\/p>\n
Given Lady Louise\u2019s determination to make her own way in the
\nworld, the chances of her swapping Mountbatten-Windsor for an HRH
\nany time soon look low.<\/p>\n
