How do you keep the day intimate, keep your guests happy and pull it off without a hitch \u2014 all while making it the best day of your life? For Taylor Swift<\/a>, history offers a playbook: John F. Kennedy Jr. pulled off the exact same trick.<\/p>\n

On September 21, 1996, Kennedy \u2014 the widely beloved, closely watched scion of Camelot \u2014 married the love of his too-brief life, Carolyn Bessette<\/a>, at the First African Baptist Church on Georgia\u2019s Cumberland Island. The paparazzi frenzy over the secretive event foreshadowed the press scrutiny the couple would face throughout their three brief years of marriage. Photographers and tabloid reporters circled incessantly \u2014 but not on the first day of autumn in 1996. Rosemarie Terenzio made sure of that.<\/p>\n

Terenzio was Kennedy\u2019s chief of staff and, that summer, his de facto wedding planner. In effect, she wrote the blueprint for how celebrities dodge the press to pull off a beautiful, private wedding. It\u2019s a blueprint that may not even be necessary for Swift and Travis Kelce<\/a>, who have fueled wedding rumors for weeks, specifically surrounding an alleged Madison Square Garden booking for a post-wedding, fan-facing event.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re married already,\u201d Terenzio told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> on Wednesday. \u201cI think it\u2019s either a big party for a bunch of people that weren\u2019t at the wedding, or it\u2019s something for her fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Call it Terenzio\u2019s dos and don\u2019ts of pulling off a secret celebrity wedding \u2014 culled from her expert run 30 years ago for Kennedy and Bessette, and from the advice she\u2019s dropped in interviews over the past week, including her chat with THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n

DO: Use Decoys<\/h2>\n

For Kennedy, Terenzio used plants and subterfuge to keep the press away from the real destination, Cumberland Island. As she wrote in The Free Press<\/em>,<\/a> she planted fake Ireland honeymoon itineraries around the office of Kennedy\u2019s George<\/em> magazine, so any staffer leaking details would send the press chasing the wrong continent. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had a reporter call me that morning and say, \u2018I\u2019m about to book a flight to Ireland \u2014 should I go?\u2019 And I just said, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t if I were you,\u2019 and that was it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also gave Bessette a code name \u2014 Nicole Miller \u2014 who happened to be planning her own wedding at the same time. The wine, the gown, the vendor arrangements: as far as anyone outside the inner circle knew, it was all for Miller\u2019s big day. It worked like a charm.<\/p>\n

Rumor has it the entire Kansas City Chiefs team is booked into the Marriott Marquis in Times Square for the weekend. If true, great news for the groom. If it\u2019s a decoy?<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is, it\u2019s genius,\u201d Terenzio said.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T: Put Anything in Writing<\/h2>\n

Leaving a paper trail doesn\u2019t work for confessional lyrics, and it definitely doesn\u2019t work for a secret wedding.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t put anything in writing \u2014 everything by phone or in person,\u201d Terenzio said. \u201cIf you get people invested in the secret and they feel like they\u2019re part of it, it\u2019s kind of exciting that they\u2019re keeping it, and they understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

DO: Keep It Small<\/h2>\n

As Terenzio recounts in The Free Press<\/em>, the Kennedy-Bessette guest list topped out around 40 people, with no printed invitations. Kennedy trimmed the extended-family list to one representative per branch; Bessette invited family and a handful of her and John\u2019s closest friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anything about the wedding was leaked, we would have known exactly who talked. But honestly, I don\u2019t think anyone wanted to. Everyone in that circle was so invested in helping John and Carolyn have this moment,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

That may well be the model if Swift and Kelce already had a smaller, private ceremony, as Terenzio suspects. But if they\u2019re also throwing a blowout at MSG for over 1,000 guests \u2014 many of them celebrities with their own schedules, publicists and fans \u2014 keeping that mostly under wraps is nothing short of a miracle.<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T: Overuse Social Media<\/h2>\n

\u201cI think she\u2019s smart about not putting anything on social media, because I think it\u2019s in service to her fans \u2014 not wanting them running all over the place. For us, it was more about the media than the people. If you guys took a ride out to the Hamptons and got duped, sorry, but that was the point,\u201d Terenzio said.<\/p>\n

DO: Embrace the Narrative That Emerges<\/h2>\n

Back in the summer of 1996, an unexpected moment nearly blew the secret \u2014 and instead became a gift. Terenzio explained how it played out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did have a stroke of luck. When Carolyn was in Paris with Narciso Rodriguez for her wedding dress fitting, someone snapped a couple of photos of them and said John and Carolyn broke up and this is her new man \u2014 two weeks before the wedding. It was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Could that trick work for Swift in 2026, with a wedding this closely watched and the timeline already public? No. Nobody would believe it \u2014 we\u2019re all far too invested in this ship sailing into the sunset.<\/p>\n

Still, there\u2019s a lesson here: if a lucky break falls in your lap, take it and don\u2019t ask questions. Swift is a beloved oversharer, but on this one, silence is golden.<\/p>\n

DO: Make Them Feel Like the Cool Kids<\/h2>\n

Asking guests to keep quiet isn\u2019t just about protecting the couple \u2014 it\u2019s smart psychology. Secrecy sells exclusivity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018Yeah, let\u2019s do this,’\u201d Terenzio said. \u201cThey feel like they\u2019re part of it, they\u2019re part of the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t take it too far, as Swift may have already. One report<\/a> cites an insider claiming some guests are frustrated.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, Swift is beloved by millions and disliked by almost no one. When you can do no wrong, nothing is too much \u2014 not sending reporters to Ireland, not turning an unwitting designer into a fake tabloid boyfriend, not shutting down 31st and 33rd Streets to rent out Madison Square Garden for the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think she should do whatever the heck she wants, and he should too,\u201d Terenzio said. \u201cI don\u2019t think anything\u2019s over the top if that\u2019s what you want to do. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, you can do whatever the heck you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

DON\u2019T: Betray Your Fans<\/h2>\n

Swift\u2019s fanbase is unlike any other \u2014 built, in large part, on inviting listeners along for her life\u2019s emotional journey. That intimacy is a risk in a secret-wedding scenario. Kennedy\u2019s foil was the tabloid media. Swift\u2019s fans are the ones she\u2019s built this relationship of vulnerability with, through the music itself. She can\u2019t leave them in the lurch.<\/p>\n

Decoys and subterfuge are fun in theory \u2014 but sending fans on a wild goose chase just to shake them isn\u2019t Swift\u2019s brand, and she\u2019d be wise not to send Swifties trekking around New York in the middle of a heat wave for nothing.<\/p>\n

Still, for the Swifties camped outside MSG on Friday hoping for a glimpse of the bride: a discreet tarp set up for guests coming and going may be the first sign of disappointment. But this is Taylor Swift. She\u2019s got some fan service up her sleeve.<\/p>\n
