I mean, it\u2019s a Diane Warren song!\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s one of my songwriting heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He recalled visiting Warren\u2019s studio in Los Angeles, where she personally performed songs for him before offering him \u201cEven At My Worst\u201d. \u201cWe went to her building, The Hit Factory in LA, and she just played us a bunch of songs. She picked up her guitar and actually played a song and sang it herself to us, which I thought was such a special experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\"><iframe style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 660px; overflow: hidden; border-radius: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.music.apple.com\/au\/album\/gentleman\/1884500125\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-storage-access-by-user-activation allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>While others initially gravitated towards different material presented during the session, Budjerah said he immediately connected with this track. \u201cWhen I heard \u2018Even At My Worst\u2019, I don\u2019t think anyone else liked it but me,\u201d he smiled. \u201cI just loved this song so much. It\u2019s what I want to say to my family. My family, my mum, she\u2019s been with me since the beginning. Even at my worst, she still thinks I\u2019m the best and is encouraging to me and lifts me up when I\u2019m down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hit my heart. I hope people feel the gratitude that I have for them in my life when they hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the single, Budjerah has made his directorial debut with its accompanying music video, filmed in his hometown of Fingal Head. Featuring his family, friends and local community, the clip places joy, love and connection front and centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted the video to show my community,\u201d he told <em>Rolling Stone AU\/NZ<\/em>. \u201cI wanted to have a positive image of an Aboriginal community and show what we\u2019re really like. There are a lot of stereotypes around, so I wanted to have something that represented that and showed that we\u2019re just people, just like everyone else.
