Although people might ask why millions of people are so obsessed with the life of a celebrity, experts state that the explanation can be found in a very interesting phenomenon known as the parasocial relationship.According to Science Alert, parasocial relationships are quite normal and are a natural part of our brain functioning. Bradley Bond from the University of San Diego, who is an expert on media psychology, stated that people generally react in an emotional way to celebrities much like they do toward other people they know personally but the emotion is somewhat less intense.“Basically, our minds process personhood similarly regardless of whether we are processing the person standing in front of us or on a screen,” Bond told ScienceAlert. He added, “Certainly we know the difference between an interpersonal interaction and watching television, for example, but our minds are still processing individuals as persons, and in turn, considering them as people.”

Why people create an emotional attachment with celebrities?

In addition, Bond examines the process through which people create emotional attachments to celebrities or even characters. In his opinion, when an individual develops an attachment to the life of an individual whom he or she has not ever met, psychologists say that this is a parasocial relationship. This kind of attachment happens due to natural empathy in humans. “When something good happens to a media figure that we feel socially connected to, we are happy for them. When something bad happens, we can get sad for them. Really, it’s the basic nature of empathy underlying these potential emotional effects of milestones,” Bond said.It is considered one of the major milestones in life; thus, it can be seen why people can get emotional about it.Dr. Lindsey Conlin Maxwell, who is a psychologist from the University of Southern Mississippi, also described herself as a Swiftie and agreed with Bond’s description. In her interview with ScienceAlert, she stated that parasocial relationships could indeed “explain” why many Taylor Swift fans are emotionally invested in her wedding.“We have spent the last 20 years listening to her music and building up these relationships with her, and so even though it’s a one-sided relationship where she doesn’t know us individually, we as Swifties feel like we know her and like we’ve been through the emotional ups and downs with her,” Maxwell said.“So, the wedding is no different; we feel like we’re involved.”According to Maxwell, music plays an important role in fostering this parasocial relationship. Music becomes a part of their own experience and memories, which causes a strong connection with the artist performing it.“Although none of the fans have ever met her in person, the connection formed through her music makes the bond feel real,” she said.Nevertheless, the two psychologists agree that such connections are always healthy. Maxwell said that fans know that their relationship with celebrities is unidirectional and can differentiate between the two kinds of relations. “The average fan, even those with strong parasocial relationships and a lot of investment in Taylor Swift’s music, can recognize that it’s her life and her milestone and not ours,” she said. This is proven by scientific findings as well. Thus, in 2020, The Journal of Neuroscience published the results of a study showing how the brain perceives celebrities within the social environment, though not in the same way as our friends and relatives. Moreover, in 2023, the journal Brain Sciences reported on the research which revealed that, despite the fact that people may feel close to celebrities and influencers, their brain treats them differently than actual relationships. Moreover, Bond highlighted that due to increased availability of social media providing people with an opportunity to communicate with celebrities virtually, the emotional connection becomes even stronger.Even though celebrity weddings tend to become the focus of public attention very frequently, psychologists state that this level of enthusiasm is not abnormal. On the contrary, it is quite normal since human brains tend to develop such bonds with other people, regardless of whether they have ever met each other or not. As long as the boundaries of adoration and reality remain intact, parasocial relationships are considered normal by scientists quoted by ScienceAlert.

‘ The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties ’

‘ Some details of this article were extracted from the following source timesofindia.indiatimes.com ’

(Photo credit: Instagram) Rumors and speculations about Taylor Swift’s personal life have created enormous interest among the masses, as many fans eagerly anticipate a possible wedding.
