For more than three decades, Texas Latino<\/a><\/strong> has remained one of Tejano music\u2019s most respected and innovative bands. As the award-winning group prepares to kick off the Fourth of July weekend<\/strong> with a free concert in Katy, Texas, founder, keyboardist, and producer Severo \u201cSevy\u201d Contreras<\/a><\/strong> is reflecting on the band\u2019s remarkable journey, the music that continues to inspire them, and the legacy they hope to leave behind.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Contreras joined The Bo Corona Show<\/a><\/strong><\/em> on Thursday, July 2, heard on Fierro HD<\/a><\/strong>, where he discussed Texas Latino\u2019s newest music, songwriting process, and the band\u2019s upcoming performance Friday, July 3, at Texas Rodeo Saloon<\/strong>. The free show will feature Texas Latino opening for legendary headliners The Hometown Boys<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s our first time performing in Katy,\u201d Contreras said. \u201cWe\u2019re very, very excited\u2026 along with our boys at The Hometown Boys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The performance is expected to be one of the marquee Tejano events of the Independence Day weekend, bringing together two of the genre\u2019s most celebrated bands for an evening of live music with free admission.<\/p>\n

A Brotherhood That Has Lasted 35 Years<\/h3>\n

Originally formed in San Antonio in 1993, Texas Latino was assembled from accomplished musicians who had performed with influential Tejano groups including Culturas<\/a><\/strong>, Grupo Sol<\/strong>, and Tiger Diaz<\/strong>. Since then, the band has earned a reputation for polished musicianship, rich vocal harmonies, dynamic horn arrangements, and a modern yet traditional Tejano sound.<\/p>\n

Contreras, who founded the band at just 19 years old, remains the lone original member.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the original owner and founder of Texas Latino,\u201d he shared. \u201cI\u2019m the only one that\u2019s left, actually. It started when I was 19 years old\u2026 and here we are 34, 35 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite lineup changes over the decades, the band\u2019s chemistry remains one of its greatest strengths.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very, very blessed to have a band that we all respect each other as brothers on the road,\u201d Contreras said. \u201cWe all look out for each other. I call it a brothership band.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Texas Latino features seven members and is fronted by award-winning vocalist Gabe Rivera<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Story Behind the Name<\/h3>\n

Contreras also revealed how the band\u2019s now-iconic name came to be.<\/p>\n

Originally, the group considered names like \u201cLittle Texas\u201d and simply \u201cTexas.\u201d However, legendary producer Manny Guerra<\/a><\/strong> offered another suggestion.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe came in and said, \u2018Hey guys, y\u2019all are going to be called Texas Latino,’\u201d Contreras recalled. \u201cWe were like, \u2018Oh, I like the way that sounds.\u2019 Ever since then, thanks to Manny for a great name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Songwriting Inspired by Real Life<\/h3>\n

As one of the band\u2019s principal songwriters, Contreras says inspiration often comes unexpectedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes things come up in a dream,\u201d he said. \u201cYou wake up and start writing stuff down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than relying solely on personal experiences, Contreras often draws inspiration from the stories shared by friends and family.<\/p>\n

One example is \u201cMi Princesa,\u201d a heartfelt father-daughter ballad inspired by a close friend\u2019s unconditional love for his daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt kind of inspired me to write \u2018Mi Princesa,’\u201d he explained. \u201cLittle things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honoring the Legends<\/h3>\n

Texas Latino recently released its newest album, Homenaje A Los Grandes<\/em>, a tribute project honoring many of the legendary artists and songwriters who helped shape Tejano and regional Mexican music.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just released Homenaje A Los Grandes<\/em>, a special tribute to some of the greats,\u201d Contreras said.<\/p>\n

The album includes collaborations with several iconic voices, including Sunny Ozuna<\/a><\/strong>, Mario Montes<\/a><\/strong> of Grupo Romance<\/strong>, Cezar Martinez<\/a><\/strong> of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales<\/a><\/strong>, and one of the final recordings featuring the late Ricky Martinez<\/a><\/strong> of The Hometown Boys.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was fortunate to record him before he passed on,\u201d Contreras said.<\/p>\n

The album serves as a heartfelt thank you to the pioneers who paved the way for future generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of those special tributes to the guys who paved the road for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project follows the tremendous success of Volumen II<\/em>, which earned Texas Latino multiple honors at the 45th Tejano Music Awards<\/a><\/strong>, including Album of the Year. Lead vocalist Gabe Rivera captured Male Vocalist of the Year, while the group also won Collaboration of the Year for \u201cPienso En Ti\u201d featuring Monica Saldivar.<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s current single, \u201cQuiero Amarte\u201d\u2014a fresh interpretation of the Los Dudes<\/a><\/strong> classic written by Joe Revelez<\/strong>\u2014continues that momentum and showcases Texas Latino\u2019s signature blend of respect for tradition and contemporary production.<\/p>\n

Advice for the Next Generation<\/h3>\n

After more than three decades in the business, Contreras says success begins with finding the right musicians and selecting great songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood song selection is very, very important,\u201d he said. \u201cFind good players that fit what you\u2019re trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s advice forged through years of experience that has helped Texas Latino become one of Tejano\u2019s most decorated and enduring acts.<\/p>\n
