Russell Allen of Symphony X<\/a> <\/b>discussed the status of the composition sessions for the band\u2019s much anticipated follow-up to 2015\u2019s \u201cUnderworld\u201d album in a recent interview with Uruguay\u2019s The Dark Melody, as per Blabbermouth<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Well, the gaps [between albums] have always been there [with\u00a0Symphony X]. They got worse and worse over the years. I think as we\u2019ve started to be sort of self-produced in a way \u2014 I mean, look, I just built all this [home studio setup]. I\u2019ve been working on everything. So, obviously, I\u2019m in the studio right now. And\u00a0Mike\u2019s [Symphony X\u00a0guitarist\u00a0Michael Romeo] been working on this stuff for years, and the guys, I guess. The problem is that when we stop, it really messes up with\u00a0Mike\u2019s creative process, and he\u2019s obviously the guy who\u2019s really the true musical director, I guess\u2026 How can I say that? The composer of the band, really, It\u2019s still a band, but he\u2019s the main guy, obviously, with the musical side of things, and the singing stuff, that\u2019s my thing. And so, the gaps have been worse, I think, as we start to just get lost in what we\u2019re doing. And then we have to stop and then start again. And we\u2019re just not that kind of band.\u00a0Mike\u2019s not wired like that. He\u2019s a real kind of a mad scientist, genius guy. He just needs to be locked in his world and not be \u2014 \u2019cause he\u2019ll start something, stop, then go back after the tour. \u2018Ah, I don\u2019t remember any of that stuff. That stuff all was shit. Let me start again.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got about \u2014 I don\u2019t know \u2014 [Michael] sent me 10 hours of stuff for a 55-minute record. It becomes a monumental task just to weed through all the stuff. And that\u2019s kind of where we\u2019re at. But he\u2019s honed a lot of it in, so we\u2019re getting close. And that\u2019s where the new album is at now. But this has been a while. People have gotta believe us when we say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019ve been working on it.\u2019 \u2018Cause that\u2019s his process, and I\u2019m not one to argue with that. It\u2019s not the best business model [laughs] if you\u2019re gonna try and make it make a bigger thing in this business, but who cares about that shit when you guys are there? It\u2019s all about the quality of what the fans are gonna hear, and that\u2019s our legacy, and that\u2019s what we leave behind. And so, obviously, at this tenure in our career, that\u2019s what we\u2019re more concerned about than a quick \u2018hey\u2019, whatever. <\/em><\/p>\n

But we\u00a0are\u00a0gonna try and use the time that\u00a0Mike\u00a0put in on this one. There\u2019s so much good material. We both feel that there\u2019s a lot to pull on for the next one. So there shouldn\u2019t be as much of a gap. The material\u2019s just too good. So it\u2019s, like, \u2018Okay, let\u2019s just pick out what this story or what this album\u2019s theme is gonna be, and then we\u2019ve got all this other stuff that\u2019s great.\u2019 And it\u2019s in that\u00a0Symphony X\u00a0realm. And we could definitely use that as a starting point for the next one. So there shouldn\u2019t be \u2014 I\u2019m not gonna make any promises, \u2019cause every time you say shit like this, something always happens. But in the point that we\u2019re at now, that\u2019s where we\u2019re at.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m not gonna apologize to you guys for taking the time. It\u2019s nothing that we\u2019re sorry for. It\u2019s just how we create this stuff\u2026 [But] we don\u2019t wanna make you guys wait forever. It\u2019s nothing against you, the fan, or something to slight you guys. It\u2019s just our process, and it\u2019s just what it takes to get it done and make it on a level that we\u2019re proud of to put out. At the end of the day, we\u2019ve gotta live with it. So that\u2019s kind of what we think about these things. So that\u2019s kind of where it\u2019s at. But it\u2019s coming along. It\u2019s really sounding good. It\u2019s really awesome.<\/em><\/p>\n

Russell made reference to Symphony X\u2019<\/b>s impending 30th anniversary Latin American tour, which is set to begin later this month.<\/p>\n

We wanna get down there and have a good time and celebrate this sort of milestone in our lives and in our careers with you guys and then get right back into it here. \u2018Cause we\u2019re not really booking anything else after this for the rest of the year, unless something amazing comes along, another opportunity. But again, that causes problems for this process. So, we\u2019re weighing all those things out. I mean, there\u2019s really nothing, I think, that can get in our way in terms of shows and stuff at this point, beyond what we\u2019re doing with you guys, and so that gives us the entire summer, fall to get the songs completely finished in terms of what they\u2019re gonna be, and then the recording process is what it is and the time it takes to do that. But I feel like it\u2019s pretty strong that the album will be pretty much in the can by, hopefully, the end of the year, if not in the fall. If we get lucky and something just really takes off, maybe a little sooner release time. So that\u2019s all label stuff and management, and they\u2019ve gotta figure out their windows.<\/em><\/p>\n
