We would reflect on what\u2019s happening on the bus [and] have a good time. That\u2019s what I wanted this album to feel like,\u201d La Reezy says. \u201c[I] wanted it to feel like home, like New Orleans culture. Wanted it to feel alive and reflecting like you\u2019re passing through the city. What better way to pass through the city than on a party bus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSkiddle Bandana,\u201d the first full-length album from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lareezymusic\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">La Reezy<\/a>, is out July 7 and drops as the 12th Ward native continues to reach new career heights.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/gambit\/music\/the-state-of-la-reezyana-new-orleans-rapper-la-reezy-has-a-massive-year\/article_40468fa4-c1a9-40d1-988b-882676796e4e.html\" target=\"_blank\">had a major 2025<\/a> \u2014 which itself built on years of hustle and hard work. A string of EPs, including one recorded with Grammy-winner PJ Morton, collided with nods from Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, The Creator and The Next Up Award from the national Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>This year has already included <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1SlN7SWe2Kz8nPdjskn6ty\" target=\"_blank\">another EP<\/a>, \u201cLeader of Da Uth,\u201d an appearance on the Jazz Fest stage with Jon Batiste and, most recently, inclusion in XXL magazine\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xxlmag.com\/la-reezy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Freshman Class<\/a> \u2014 a closely watched (and debated) feature bringing national attention to quickly rising rappers. He says he\u2019s confident in his music and what it can give to others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do the work,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel like my music is life changing. I feel my music is healing, important and necessary. And I\u2019m just grateful to have the opportunity to spread my name to such a huge platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That swaggering confidence can be heard across <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1ua9bT9kFnJeGi9j9nbfIL\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSkiddle Bandana,\u201d<\/a> framed by vignettes of friends climbing onto a party bus for a ride around New Orleans. But it\u2019s not just hot air: La Reezy is an introspective writer \u2014 one of his 2024 EPs, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3kjwTq1DN9VYZSnJJ8Ic5T\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWe All Need Help,\u201d<\/a> focused on his mental health \u2014 who understands his value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it was just a fresh realization of wow, like my curly hair is super cool. My chains are fly. I think I\u2019ve grown to be more confident and proud of myself and my looks and my accent and where I come from,\u201d La Reezy says.<\/p>\n<p>La Reezy co-executive produced \u201cSkiddle Bandana\u201d with Oakland producer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/callmeclaydough\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">ClayDough<\/a>, using sample contributions by JBoogz, Al Hug, Spiff Sinatra and Ray Marco. New Orleans great <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/macphippsofficial\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Mac Phipps<\/a> introduces La Reezy ahead of the album\u2019s title track, vocalist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maleahtheesinger\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Maleah<\/a> appears on the song \u201cHow Did You Love Me\u201d and the throughline skits feature rapper and comedian <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lookatlollyy\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Lolly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A diligent creator, La Reezy tends to work months ahead and made \u201cSkiddle Bandana\u201d last year. But with four projects in line for 2025 \u2014 \u201cWelcome to La Reezyana,\u201d the PJ Morton collaboration \u201cPardon Me, I\u2019m Different,\u201d \u201cLa Reezyana Shakedown\u201d and \u201cFree99$\u201d \u2014 he decided to hold on to the release and further flesh it out into a full-length.<\/p>\n<p>Bandanas have a long history in hip-hop, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZnTe08lgtH\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">the art around<\/a> \u201cSkiddle Bandana\u201d features La Reezy draped in a large square of yellow and red. But he\u2019s leaving the title open to interpretation, he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said it one day, and it sounded fly,\u201d La Reezy says. \u201cIt could be community, unity, vibrant \u2014 I just know that it\u2019s a way to express the Black experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"La Reezy - How Did You Love Me (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eV3hs0umM2Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>La Reezy touches on a range of topics across the robust album. He raps about growing up in a home where money is tight on \u201cNormal Struggles\u201d and how family members have shown up for him over the years on \u201cFamily Bizzy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the dynamic \u201cMelanate It,\u201d one of his latest singles, La Reezy celebrates Black identity. And on the warm \u201cHow Did You Love Me,\u201d he reflects on love, growth and his relationship with his partner. He also reminds the listener to get out and live on the closing track \u201cWe Live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the album is \u201ctrying to find the balance in understanding Black identity through struggling and understanding how the limitations that may come with being young from New Orleans actually is a blessing,\u201d La Reezy says. \u201cIt creates an opportunity for you to make something bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no rap music without limitations. There\u2019s no great art without some form of adversity,\u201d he adds. \u201cSo [I\u2019m] finding that balance through these experiences that I\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La Reezy is hitting another milestone later this year when he heads out on his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DaBJDj7x6zP\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">first headlining tour.<\/a> After dates in London, Amsterdam, Paris and Cologne, Germany, he spends October and November in the U.S. and closes the tour with a hometown show on Dec. 5 at Gasa Gasa.
