Good vibes and lattes. Lots of eclectic sorts gathered around sofas and chatting. Good conversation about the importance of the arts and supporting creative people.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn, along with producer <strong>Karl Smith<\/strong>, created a program in 2021 to celebrate local arts, music and culture. Some local artists. Some from all over.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cKarl came to me with an idea of a radio show with interviews with local performers,&#8221; Dawn said. &#8220;He said I had a good voice for the radio. That was 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karl is the host of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/j-cubed-jazz-to-the-3rd-power-cool-smooth-and-hot\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/j-cubed-jazz-to-the-3rd-power-cool-smooth-and-hot\">\u201cJ:Cubed, Jazz to the Third Power: Cool, Smooth and Hot.\u201d<\/a> That show airs at 7 p.m. Saturdays.\u00a0 Another\u00a0good radio voice.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A year of fine tuning, meetings and pre-production before the first show aired in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKarl had a lot of faith in me that I could do it,&#8221; Dawn said. &#8220;And I grew up listening to WVPE.\u00a0I was 15 and waking up with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/morning-edition\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/morning-edition\/\">&#8216;Morning Edition.&#8217;<\/a> This is a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An offshoot of \u201cThe Sauce\u201d is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/show\/the-sauce-live\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/show\/the-sauce-live\">\u201cThe Sauce Live,\u201d<\/a> which takes Dawn to the road for live performances and interviews.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>The sauce name comes from the flavors of music and culture that are part of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><media-image image-set=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/01\/NSBT\/90767505007-burns-07012026-02.jpeg bestCrop, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/01\/NSBT\/90767505007-burns-07012026-02.jpeg?crop=936,702,x0,y0 4:3, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/01\/NSBT\/90767505007-burns-07012026-02.jpeg?crop=936,1249,x0,y0 3:4, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/07\/01\/NSBT\/90767505007-burns-07012026-02.jpeg?crop=936,527,x0,y0 16:9\" image-alt=\"\" credit=\"Provided by Dawn Burns\" caption=\"Dawn Burns is a teacher, writer, radio show host and musician from South Bend.\" orientation=\"vertical\" class=\"spacer-large\" util-module-path=\"elements\/media\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou add a little spice to the sauce,&#8221; Dawn said. &#8220;That improves the flavor. You make a pot of stew, you want it to be rich, to have a punch.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>She said she has done 64 Sauces, 54 live performance shows and 81 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/the-sauce-with-dawn-burns\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wvpe.org\/the-sauce-with-dawn-burns\">podcasts<\/a>.\u00a0That makes it just around the corner from 200 productions. All in all, that\u2019s a lot of talking to rappers, musicians, singers, photographers and dancers. All these individuals have stories about their lives, struggles and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>A dream interview? Dawn is holding out for <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/QueenLatifah\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/QueenLatifah\/\">Queen Latifah<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cI have some pinch-myself moments when I\u2019ve met some people. For example, <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.steviewonder.net\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.steviewonder.net\/\">Stevie Wonder<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0It was only a few minutes, but it was memorable.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast world has added a little more flavor to &#8220;The Sauce.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe podcasts are longer conversations with artists, full conversations,&#8221; Dawn said. &#8220;I love a back story on how they discovered the music and what leads to creating.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>She added that South Bend&#8217;s location in the Midwest is perfect for travel for live shows to Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit and Grand Rapids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndy has a high level of jazz. It deserves more attention,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She was raised in South Bend and moved to the West Coast for college and life. She worked for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/warnerchappell.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/warnerchappell.com\/\">Warner Chappell Music publishing company<\/a>, a division of Warner Music. She met some interesting people through the years. \u201cI was there in the early days of hip-hop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She then decided to move back east to South Bend so she and her daughter, <strong>Hali<\/strong>, would be near family.<\/p>\n<p>Once she was home again in Indiana, she took education classes at Indiana University South Bend and began teaching. This fall, Dawn will be at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/harrison.sb.school\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/harrison.sb.school\/\">Harrison Elementary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI love teaching,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was an educator since childhood when I would play being a teacher. The band, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FillmoresLadder\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FillmoresLadder\/\">Fillmore\u2019s Ladder<\/a>, has been performing for 20 years at festivals and clubs. Most recently, the band was at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nilesbluegrass.org\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/nilesbluegrass.org\/\">Niles Bluegrass Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The WVPE platform is a great way to introduce musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much local brilliance,&#8221; Dawn said. &#8220;You hear their story and their music. The story goes everywhere through the app and the podcasts. We have created a community of people who support the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opening a small door is great for performers.
