Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor has reached a major milestone
\nafter graduating from the University of St Andrews \u2013 but her future
\nremains one of the biggest unanswered questions facing the Royal
\nFamily.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh
\nhas completed an undergraduate degree in English and International
\nRelations, with her proud parents travelling to Scotland to watch
\nher graduate.<\/p>\n
Now, Lady Louise has revealed she plans to take a gap year,
\ncombining work, volunteering and travel before deciding on a
\nlong-term career.<\/p>\n
It follows another significant moment when she received her Duke
\nof Edinburgh\u2019s Gold Award from her father at the Palace of
\nHolyroodhouse during the 70th anniversary year of the youth scheme
\nfounded by her grandfather, Prince Philip.<\/p>\n
Unlike many members of the Royal Family before her, Lady Louise
\nhas not stepped into full-time royal duties.<\/p>\n
Although she was entitled to be styled HRH Princess Louise at
\nbirth as the granddaughter of the reigning monarch, Prince Edward
\nand Sophie chose instead to raise their children using the courtesy
\ntitles of an earl\u2019s children. Lady Louise has continued to use that
\nstyle into adulthood.<\/p>\n
For years, the expectation has been that Lady Louise and her
\nyounger brother, James, Earl of Wessex, would pursue private
\ncareers rather than become working royals.<\/p>\n
However, her graduation has reignited debate over whether that

Some royal commentators argue the monarchy can no longer afford
\nto overlook younger members of the family. With King Charles, Queen

Etiquette expert Laura Windsor has suggested Lady Louise\u2019s
\ndecision to live what she describes as a largely ordinary life,
\nincluding taking a gap year before beginning a career, reflects the
\nfamily\u2019s desire for privacy rather than public service. She argued
\nthat if Lady Louise intends to remain outside the core Royal
\nFamily, there is little reason for her to adopt the princess title
\nto which she is entitled.<\/p>\n
For now, there is no indication that Lady Louise intends to
\nbecome a working royal.<\/p>\n
Instead, she appears set to spend the coming year gaining life
\nexperience away from the spotlight before deciding where her future
\nlies.<\/p>\n
Whether that future is in public service, the private sector,
\nthe military or, eventually, supporting the monarchy remains to be
