Just like being a musician, writer, or filmmaker, honing your craft requires a person to spend a considerable amount of time alone working on their art, which can lead to an expected level of social awkwardness or straight-up questionable behavior. It\u2019s one of those things that comes with the territory, and you just have to be built for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some people are able to assimilate better than others and live normal, healthy lives when they\u2019re not on the road trying to get good and win over audiences across the country. Don\u2019t get me wrong, both pieces of media are total bummers, but they each have their own distinct flavor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite its comedic backdrop, <em>Entertainment<\/em> is not a comedy, but rather a sad exploration of one man\u2019s life as the road swallows him whole and he becomes a stranger to everyone he loves. We follow him from gig to gig alongside his opening act, known only as Eddie the Opener (Tye Sheridan). Like the <em>Louie<\/em> episodes, our protagonist is suffering an existential crisis, and \u201cdepressed\u201d is his default resting state, while his hack opener is having a great time schlepping across the country and performing his set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When The Comedian isn\u2019t humiliating himself on stage with his questionable brand of humor met with silence, he\u2019s watching soap operas in whatever run-down motel he\u2019s staying at for the night and leaving voicemails for his daughter. The whole thing is a total bummer, but Turkington sells it. He\u2019s simply going through the motions, whether he still wants to or not, because it\u2019s the only life he knows. It\u2019s an excellent film that\u2019s executed flawlessly, made even better by smaller roles from John C. Reilly and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/ent\/subversive-stand-up-special-hack.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Tim Heidecker;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Tim Heidecker&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Tim Heidecker<\/a> (who also contributed to the screenplay). But I\u2019d be lying if I said this movie wasn\u2019t dark as hell. If you\u2019re not in the best headspace while watching <em>Entertainment<\/em>, it\u2019ll probably leave you worse off, and I mean that as a compliment of the highest order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Having spent a considerable amount of my formative years consuming all the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/music\/articles\/raunchy-r-rated-comedy-special-185639120.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:stand-up comedy;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;stand-up comedy&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">stand-up comedy<\/a> I could get my hands on, <em>Entertainment<\/em> feels like essential viewing. It shows you exactly what happens when somebody who\u2019s known for their jokes doesn\u2019t find anything funny anymore.
