A two-day hearing to determine who will pay the estimated \u00a350m costs of the case will be held on July 29.<\/p>\n

The Duke and his fellow claimants were warned by the judge last year that the financial consequences of the legal battle<\/a> could be substantial if they were defeated.<\/p>\n

The seven claimants have insurance of up to \u00a314.1m to cover their bills, the court heard previously.<\/p>\n

In his 436-page ruling, the judge rejected the claimants\u2019 argument that simply because the information was private and the publisher could not explain how it had been sourced, the relevant articles \u201cmust have been unlawfully sourced\u201d.<\/p>\n

He found that the journalists who gave evidence provided \u201clawful explanations\u201d for the sourcing<\/a> of each of the 50-plus disputed articles, which were accepted by the court.<\/p>\n

Mr Justice Nicklin was also critical of the \u201clegal research team\u201d behind the claim, finding its evidence \u201cinconsistent\u201d and \u201cunconvincing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Associated Newspapers welcomed the ruling, describing it as \u201can overwhelming victory for The Daily Mail and its journalists, and for a free press generally\u201d.<\/p>\n

It added: \u201cMr Justice Nicklin today cleared The Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, and dismissed every single one of the 97 allegations made by the claimants.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn every case, the judge accepted the honesty of our journalists\u2019 evidence on how they sourced their stories. This is a magnificent vindication of The Daily Mail\u2019s journalism.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some of the most outrageous allegations made when the case was launched in a blaze of publicity four years ago \u2013 placing bugs in people\u2019s cars and homes, listening to calls as they were made and illicitly accessing bank accounts \u2013 no credible evidence was ever presented.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
