The private investigator whose alleged confessions prompted the high-profile claimants, including Prince Harry, to sue Associated Newspapers has been comprehensively discredited.<\/p>\n
In a 2021 witness statement, Mr Burrows appeared to admit targeting \u201chundreds, possibly thousands of people\u201d through voicemail hacking, landline tapping and accessing financial and medical information for a journalist at the Mail on Sunday.<\/p>\n
However, when Mr Burrows, 55, was finally called as a witness, he described his apparent confession as a \u201cfalsehood\u201d, \u201ca stitch-up\u201d, \u201clies\u201d, \u201ccomplete and utter untruth\u201d and \u201ca thing of fiction\u201d.<\/p>\n
In his ruling, Mr Justice Nicklin described the private investigator\u2019s credibility as having been \u201ccomprehensively undermined,\u201d noting his evidence was \u201cargumentative, evasive, internally inconsistent and, at times, extraordinary\u201d.<\/p>\n
He ruled that Mr Burrows provided \u201cno reliable support\u201d for the claims and found that the highly incriminating 2021 witness statement attributed to him could not even be proven to be his own words.<\/p>\n
Mr Justice Nicklin said: \u201cI do not consider Mr Burrows to be a witness on whom I can safely rely for any disputed proposition unless it is clearly corroborated by reliable independent evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
The judge also noted a \u201cserious error of professional judgment\u201d by the claimants\u2019 solicitor, Anjlee Sangani, in certifying the statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
