They held a four-day songwriting retreat, Jan. 6-9, 2025, at Smith Lake in Northern Alabama as she started building material for what would become the <em>ace<\/em> album, released Nov. 14 by Big Loud. They were so productive in the first part of the trip that they turned their last night of the retreat into a big celebration. They paid for it on getaway day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe woke up super hungover,\u201d she remembers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut Cooke and her writing partners \u2013 Johnny Clawson (\u201cWeren\u2019t for the Wind,\u201d \u201cSwear Words\u201d), Seth Ennis (\u201cAmen,\u201d \u201cBoys Back Home\u201d), Joe Fox (\u201cIt Won\u2019t be Long,\u201d \u201cLast Night Lonely\u201d) and Kyle Sturrock (\u201cTexas,\u201d \u201cGet to Drinkin\u2019\u201d) \u2013 had a quota for the trip, and they were one song short. They all thought it was too good a line to bury it in a second verse, so they made it the title of a new song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt used the word \u201cbaby\u201d two different ways and worked so naturally that a listener wasn\u2019t likely to notice the repetition. And with its minor holster image, it created a slight Western flair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think that\u2019s why all of our ears perked up when Seth said that,\u201d Clawson notes. \u201cWe were, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s clever without being too clever.\u2019 If you can catch someone\u2019s attention without trying too hard, that is usually a pretty good recipe for something that people will come back to.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ashley Cooke - baby blues (official music video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lyRdtDO34jI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFox developed a slinky chord progression on guitar, just enough out of the ordinary to raise an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s one out-of-place chord,\u201d he says. \u201cOff the top of my head, I think it\u2019s a two-major, which in a major scale, the chord progression should be two-minor. Adding that two-major kind of makes it feel a little funky, a little different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe\u00a0chorus emphasized the song\u2019s dilemma: Does the couple stay or go? It all sounded so good that they made it the opening stanza. That used to happen frequently \u2013 think Willie Nelson\u2019s \u201cOn the Road Again,\u201d Alan Jackson\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Rock the Jukebox\u201d or Florida Georgia Line\u2019s \u201cCruise\u201d \u2013 but occurs more infrequently in the current atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIf you can start a song with the chorus, you\u2019re immediately in hit land,\u201d Clawson suggests. \u201cOther things have to go right, obviously, but that formula has worked plenty of times before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOnce the chorus played out, they added detail in the verse \u2013 the couple is prepping for a 7:30 reservation, but it\u2019s already 7:31, and she notices he\u2019s undone one button on his shirt. She recognizes the move: He\u2019s thinking about \u201csomething dirty, it ain\u2019t martinis in a glass.\u201d Clever, eh?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBy verse two, she\u2019s clearly taking him seriously \u2013 she allows a kiss, insists they\u2019re still heading out, but then gives in again. Line by line, it\u2019s an ordinary development, but in the big picture, that verse cinches the song\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIf the whole song was her saying, \u2018Hey, stop,\u2019 then it kind of just feels like the #metoo movement,\u201d Fox observes. \u201cI feel like with the second verse, where she\u2019s down to it, it gives it a mutual agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the fourth and final chorus, they tagged it with another half-chorus, recognizing that it\u2019s now 7:58, and she changes her tune \u2013 \u201c<em>don\u2019t you<\/em> put those baby blues away\u201d \u2013 giving the tale a bit of a happy ending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat \u2018Baby Blues\u2019 song literally just flowed,\u201d Cooke says. \u201cI have a feeling if it didn\u2019t feel that way, based on our hungover state, we all would have been like, \u2018We\u2019ll just finish this back in town.\u2019 But it\u2019s a really cool idea, and it was just so easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo was the first recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe demo happened even quicker,\u201d Ennis says. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure Joe already had some of his equipment packed up, because he was running tracks that day. He did get Ashley\u2019s vocal there at the cabin right before we left, and I think we just had a guitar\/vocal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tClawson threw harmony on it before they hit the road back to Nashville. The writers all felt that \u201cBaby Blues\u201d was the highlight of the trip, but the label didn\u2019t hear it that way \u201cThis was one of those songs that I fought for big-time,\u201d Cooke says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tUltimately, they compromised \u2013 she could cut \u201cBaby Blues\u201d if she\u2019d commit to another song Big Loud preferred \u2013 and she recorded it in the front studio at Sound Stage with producer Dann Huff (Kane Brown, Keith Urban), who took to it immediately. \u201cShe\u2019s a really intuitive songwriter,\u201d he says. \u201cShe just finds a slight difference in what could normally be a somewhat clich\u00e9, or overused, type of situation. She always finds a different angle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHuff found a different angle, too, carving out not one, but <em>two<\/em> solo sections. \u201cAfter the first or second time that we played it down with the band,\u201d Cooke recalls, \u201che went, \u2018You know, I\u2019ve already heard the chorus twice now. You started with the chorus, and I love the chorus, but I just kind of feel like this song is such a vibe that people want to just sway with their partner with their beer and have a good time for a second.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGuitarist Derek Wells crafted a solo after the second chorus that could have easily fit Emmylou Harris\u2019 Hot Band in the 1970s. After the third chorus, steel guitarist Justin Schipper and Wells split an atmospheric run. \u201cI think I had a little buyer\u2019s remorse right before we were mixing it,\u201d Huff admits. \u201cI think I experimented with taking one of the solos out, but didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tClawson and Cooke, who were already friends, briefly explored a relationship that they revealed publicly around the time that \u201cBaby Blue\u201d was released on the <em>ace<\/em> album Nov. 14. The two have since moved on amicably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBig Loud revised its thoughts about \u201cBaby Blue\u201d after seeing crowd reaction at her live shows. The label released it to country radio via PlayMPE on June 2. It launched at No. 57 on <em>Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Country Airplay chart dated July 11.
