The Princess of Wales has congratulated British wildcard Arthur
\nFery after he made history by reaching the Wimbledon men\u2019s singles
\nsemi-finals.<\/p>\n
Catherine, who is Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club,
\ndescribed the 23-year-old\u2019s achievement as \u201cfantastic\u201d after he
\nbecame the first British wildcard in the Open Era to reach the last
\nfour at SW19.<\/p>\n
Writing on social media following his straight-sets victory over
\nItaly\u2019s Flavio Cobolli, the Princess said: \u201cA memorable day at
\nWimbledon. Congratulations to Arthur Fery on becoming the first
\nBritish wildcard to reach the Gentlemen\u2019s Singles semi-finals in
\nthe Open Era, a fantastic achievement that has inspired so many.
\nWishing you the very best for the next round.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fery, who grew up just 10 minutes from the All England Club,
\nproduced an outstanding display on Centre Court to defeat the ninth
\nseed 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 and book a semi-final clash with second
\nseed Alexander Zverev on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Queen was among those watching the remarkable victory from
\nthe Royal Box after making a surprise appearance at the
\nChampionships. Dressed in a turquoise chiffon dress by Anna
\nValentine, Camilla joined the Centre Court crowd in giving the
\nBritish player a standing ovation after he sealed victory with an
\nace.<\/p>\n
An emotional Fery admitted afterwards that he was still coming
\nto terms with his achievement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t believe it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible playing on
\nCentre Court for the second time, the second win.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked how he would prepare for the biggest match of his career,
\nthe world No. 114 replied: \u201cI don\u2019t know as I\u2019ve never been in this
\nposition before. I\u2019m just going to keep going. I\u2019ve been doing
\ngreat for the last 10 days, so I\u2019m just going to keep going and see
\nwhere that takes me.\u201d<\/p>\n
After clinching match point, Fery collapsed onto the Centre
\nCourt grass before embracing his opponent at the net, as spectators
\nrose to applaud his historic triumph. His parents watched the
\nvictory alongside actress Elle Fanning and adventurer Bear
\nGrylls.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also congratulated the British
\nstar, calling his run from wildcard entrant to Wimbledon
\nsemi-finalist \u201ca brilliant performance on the biggest stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fery is only the second wildcard in Wimbledon history to reach
\nthe men\u2019s singles semi-finals and now stands just two victories
\naway from matching Goran Ivanisevic\u2019s famous 2001 triumph as the
\nonly wildcard to win the Gentlemen\u2019s Singles title.<\/p>\n
